We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carson Cook a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Carson, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I watched a movie the other day that focuses on time over matter. What I mean by that is, time matters and time is key in developing your craft, and that is what I have realized a couple years into the music industry. When I first started making music, it felt like a hobby to have fun with some friends on my downtime. But as time went on, not only did I figure out I had potential but other people did as well. So that circle kind of grew into a little high school rap group in a way. I didn’t know what to think or really even know what music meant to me and my life. Time goes on and I start to develop a passion for music. Not because I discovered I actually do have talent, more because of the way music made me step into my own element. I’ve never been the one to settle so once Covid hit in 2020 I had a lot more time on my hands. Knowing that, I put a lot of that time into music and how I can develop my craft the right way. It used to be knocking 3-4 songs out a week to 1-2 songs every month. I focus on relating to my audience as much as possible so yes, quality does matter and that only comes from the direction of your craft. I’ve learned that, and I continue to build on that years to come.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Music was brought to my attention by one of my friends actually. He goes by, “Pavekae”. I knew he made music and had all of the equipment so once we locked in it almost never went away. I was just in it for the fun of it while he was actually pursuing it. Seeing somebody pursue something outside of 9-5 that’s close to me inspired me to do the same but in my own way. Ever since then, I’ve been locked in mentally without anyone to stop me. I am a Hip-Hop/R&B artist & songwriter that goes by Carson Cook. I am everywhere on all platforms. I was born & raised for 21 years in Kansas City, MO and recently moved to Denver, Colorado about 5-6 months ago. Still fresh in the scene, but definitely made the move to seek more opportunity. I’ve toured to St.Louis, Oklahoma City, Lawrence, KS, & 2 shows completed in Denver, Colorado already. I have a 7 song tape out called, “STORYTELLER” with over 100,000 streams. I currently have 3 official music videos out on Youtube now. First release under me on major platforms was in January of 2021. It’s currently 2023 and I have over 1,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. I just dropped a music video on May 15th called, “Gateway 2 Love” an Hotline Bling Remix from the famous Drake. I wanted to resonate with the world a little bit and bring back a 7 year old vibe to life again. I am currently blessed for the opportunity to work with SG Kid Hazel who’s apart of “Slaughter Gang” with 21 Savage. We’ve been locked in and I got something special with him coming sooner rather than later. I believe this is the start to the storm of Carson Cook.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best thing I can say is to focus that creatives are apart of the community. No matter if it doesn’t have a 9-5 attachment to most of the creative jobs, it is still apart of the community as a whole and people in society should welcome every bit of that. I guarantee we would see a lot more wings spread from people in the creative world if society became a little more accepting. I’m not necessarily saying everyone is hating, but there are people looking on the other side for sure and looking past the many talented creatives in society. The best thing society can do is to just be accepting and positive. You bring negativity and hatred out of it then obviously it will cause chaos. Keep things simple & sweet, move on and go about your business.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to inspire. That is as simple as it gets. I want people to feel in place when they listen to my music. I want people to feel motivated when they hear my music. I want people to cry when they listen to my music. I want people to laugh and have fun when they listen to my music. I want all of the emotional attachment from one to another to be present when someone first hears my music for the first time. I want it to stick with them for the rest of their lives. It’s about relevancy with me. I want to be relevant for years upon years upon years, not just a couple of them.
