We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carrow Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carrow below.
Carrow, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Rippaverse was founded by Eric D July after he decided to make the choice to make a change in the comic industry. He didn’t want to make a small change by creating a comic, but he wanted to create a company that would honor the golden age of comics and focus on values such as focus on quality and respecting the customer.
When Eric launched ISOM #1, his original goal was to pay for the production of the comic and humbled by the demand and support of others who felt the same way he did about the industry. Driven by that passion and need, Eric pushed onward to focus on making his customers happy and reached out to legendary writers such as Chuck Dixon, the Soska Sisters, and Mike Baron who wrote iconic characters and the keystone stories that were well received by readers and fans.
Carrow, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Eric D July is a Texas native who grew up with his mother and was inspired by comics as he grew up. The Flash was his favorite and inspired him to go into track so he could also run fast which allowed him an opportunity to go to college where he majored in computer science. Even at a young age, Eric always had a creative spark in him and it showed as he created music with ‘Teach me How to Dougie” being an early iconic song he collaborated on. After that, Eric moved into heavy metal as a lead singer and founded his own band–Backwordz. When he wasn’t touring with the band, Eric was ghost writing lyrics and creating commentary videos on YouTube. In July 2022, Eric launched Rippaverse with the pre-order of ISOM #1.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Launching Rippaverse has been a constant learning experience both from a business owner perspective to the industry. I’ve been humbled a few times by the work that goes into something such as creating toys and figures and had to bench of a few of those projects until the company was ready for that kind of investment. My big goal was to keep everything in America where I could but the costs to do that is a lot higher than the general public knows. As much as I wanted to push through with that within the first year, we had to set it to the side and focus on creative books so we could have those funds to do so.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
It started early for me. I’ve been a face on YouTube since 2016 and I’ve never been shy to discuss my mind on politics or point out the fallacies in the government process. Combining that with my creative work, attention to my community, and my own financial responsibility–I was able to save up to pay for the big investment of creation my first graphic novel. It is, in a big part, thanks to the community that supports me that I am able to be here where I am. It’s a big reason why I always focus on making the customer happy because it’s their passion along with my own that has made it all possible. Rippaverse is important to me and I don’t want to cut corners with anything we do, which is why I always push for the best.
