We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carrolee Drummonds. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carrolee below.
Hi Carrolee, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The mission of the Carrolee Moore Consulting Group (CMCG) is to usher people away from social media marketing as the central tool for business growth. We have become addicted to social media as a society, and businesses are still, more often than not, putting all their eggs into the organic growth social media basket. What I’ve found is that the next generation, the one that never knew a world without cell phones and social media, are rebelling against what has become the norm, and are largely choosing to create communities on other platforms instead of the traditional social media platforms.
My goal is to help experts and service providers who are tired of being on the social media hamster wheel showcase their genius in other ways. That’s why I launched the Other People’s Podcasts (OPP) program. It helps my clients decenter social media in their business (and hopefully their lives) to get in front of people who are more prone to purchase, and more likely to afford high ticket services, etc.
A perfect world to me would be one where we have put social media in its rightful place as a society. It will be de-centered and humans will slowly move back to being social and building communities for real.
Carrolee, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a professional storyteller. I get paid by my client partners to help them cut through the noise and develop messaging that resonates (and pushes their industry forward).
I am a writer, a professional speaker and content marketer with over 15 years of experience. Central to all I do is the age-old truth that people, heritage and culture are connected through stories. We remember stories more often than we remember statistics. We recall how someone made us feel because of the words they chose to use, no matter what they meant. Words, graphics, art, photos, videos, and any other form of media are simply vehicles by which stories are shared and that’s why I love them all.
See, storytelling is a part of my essence. Blame it on my Jamaican upbringing, or my deep history as a licensed preacher in the Black church, I just think good storytelling is THE most important thing we can do as a society. After all, the stories we tell ourselves become history.
This is what excites me. The opportunity to help experts tell their stories and create outsized impact from my small contribution.
At CMCG, we help experts and consultants become magnets to their ideal clients using the power of Other People’s Podcasts (OPP). We specialize in offering prepping, pitching, and positioning our clients to leverage the growing marketing channel of podcasts without having to produce one themselves. Our ultimate goal is to help true experts finally step off the social media hamster wheel and tell their stories to more qualified leads, while growing their thought leadership.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My most recent pivot in business came as I chose to shut down my marketing agency to start a full time consulting practice. This meant I had to let go of my entire team, save one assistant. I had to transition my clients to another service providers. I had to let the leads I’d been in contact with know of my intention to transition out of the business. Lastly, I had to come to grips with the fact that the dream I once had, was changing.
I spent the next few months talking to people. I did over a dozen informational interviews where I asked questions about the biggest pain points people were experiencing in business. I kept hearing some similar messages – lead generation and brand awareness.
I thought about what in my background could directly address these challenges and offer a solution that I would be uniquely qualified to provide. That’s how I landed on Other People’s Podcasts (OPP) where I help experts and speakers really fine tune their content strategy by fully leveraging platforms they don’t have to create. This pivot has changed my life, and has reignited my fire for marketing.
It was not easy choosing to halt everything for 90 days, but the results have been incredible. With a validated offer, I now can freely offer a solution that I know works and addresses my clients’ most pressing needs in business.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that fear is a negative thing. I used to walk around paralyzed by fear, and then added the guilt and shame that came from me knowing I was walking in fear.
When I learned that fear could actually be a powerful motivator I started looking at it differently. How could I use the fear I felt as a motivator to get to my goals? I had to first acknowledge that I felt the fear, and release the guilt and shame I had been carrying around.
It also helped that I started valuing my opinions over others. Where someone else might see failure, I saw growth. I saw major lessons that helped me craft a better way forward.
Fear now is an indicator to me that I am walking into new territory and I’ll need to grab hold of new tools – namely community, my faith, and a dogged belief that if I am facing something I can overcome it.
I unlearned the behavior of allowing fear to dictate how I live my life. I don’t need to be unafraid to act. I now move no matter the feeling.
