We recently connected with Carrigain Scadden and have shared our conversation below.
Carrigain, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I believe that the best investment is in yourself. Each year I plan ahead on what continuing education classes I would like to take. Although growth and pursuing knowledge is very important, often times it can become expensive and time consuming. This one particular year I had so many financial obligations but I decided in spend my last 2k, leaving me with a penny to my name, to take a class I was waitlisted for. But I believed in my ability to learn quickly and provide the service to make my money back right away. Even though it was a challenging and long course, it was the best decision I had made. I absolutely love to offer this modality and it has changed the life of myself and many people and I couldn’t be more grateful I took the leap!

Carrigain, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Carrigain, I was born in raised in Aurora, Colorado. When I first started working at a young age, I found myself working a lot of service jobs (hosting, serving, etc). I found that I was good at working with people but I wanted to have a career. Soon after I found a job as a dental assistant, which I enjoyed. My coworkers and boss were great people and also helped me become a better person. I spent over 2 years there and although I enjoyed caring for others I felt that maybe it wasn’t the environment for me. I always thought facials and massage would be a fun service to provide. I moved at that time to Florida and happened to land an apartment right in front of an Aveda Institute. I decided that it wouldn’t hurt to just see what programs were offered and what my options were. I was very happy to learn that they had a dual program where I could earn both licensures at the same time and absolutely feel in love with every service we did. After graduating I moved back to Colorado to aid in taking care of a family member. And continued my dream of working in a spa. I really fell in love with holistic and organic treatments as I saw the need for those who may have more sensitivities and medical concerns that could have then turned away from other spas. I also felt that the spa world could use more inclusion when it came to skin types and body. As an Afro-Spanish person I wanted to have a vibe where an person of color, identity and body type would feel welcome and at home to receive the healing services that our communities should have access too. I think the environment plays a key role in making people feel welcomed before you even begin a service. And that a spa service should be tailored to who you are and what you are seeking. I love providing a space where people can be and let their walls down, wether we’re celebrating something amazing in life or taking space to recover from heavier emotions. To me providing spa services is more than just the aesthetic, I believe in using many modalities that also help regulate our internal systems to help aid in how we feel and look everyday. Most of time when we are presented with like; acne, pain, signs of aging, are messages coming from within the body, one system or another. So how can address the root cause to maintain and outer glow!? Thus creating Healing Glo Spa. Here I only use quality organic products and holistic modalities I’ve studied over the last 9 years of my career to create service’s catered to your needs. This can include; breath work, aroma, meditation, reiki and so much more!

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I think my whole life shows I’m resilient. I felt when I was born I was stamped to be another statistic. A Hispanic girl, born to a young single mother growing up low income with my two brothers, we lived in a small apartment in a dangerous area. I felt I was always told and treated that I would end up a teen mom or that I would never achieve much, especially being fatherless. But I decided to focus on school and work hard because I believed my only way out was college, something my family would never be able to afford. To most people’s surprise I was a gifted student and was accepted into an International Baccalaureate program in high school and completed three years of college classes before graduation. Since then I’ve battled with being low income and the trauma of not having a father in my life. The little girl I was would’ve never dreamed I would own my own business and become and educator in my field all before the age of 30!

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Although as I’ve stated many times seeking knowledge is something that is very important to me, but that would be nothing without self reflection. Life is all about growing and becoming a better person. It’s important to crave out time and take a look at yourself and see where you can do better, how can you improve, maybe there is a situation you are at fault for and how can you correct it? We are all humans just trying to figure out this thing called life and we are going to stumble along the way. But we must be humble and pick ourselves up along the way.
