Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carrie Veatch. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Carrie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I can’t imagine my life (now) as anything other than a business owner. I own a couple businesses now! I’ve always craved freedom and entrepreneurship is the path that allows me the most freedom. I love that I get to choose the projects/clients I work with and that I’m in charge of my own schedule. It allows me the flexibility that I desired for so long before I ever had it. However, I always want to share as much of the picture as possible and there are days that it feels like trudging through mud. Like it would be so much easier to get a job and be told what to do. Having your own business is completely different than having a job and am employee mindset. Neither is better. But they are just very different! And I think too many people go into business because they want the freedom, to help people at a deep level, ad the unlimited income potential. While all of these are true and wonderful, it’s also still a “job” at the end of the day and business is about helping people in exchange for currency. So sales has to be a huge priority, which I certainly didn’t realize at the beginning and I know the same has been true for many of my clients that have hired me! Normalizing all the self-doubt, the emotions, and the “wouldn’t it be easier if I just got a job” thoughts are crucial if you ask me. One of the things I learned way too late in life is just cause you have a thought doesn’t make it true! So even if you have thoughts about wanting a regular job does not mean you have to act on it!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For as long as I remember, I have always desired to make a difference in this world. But, I lived for so many years unable to truly set myself free. Living in vicious cycles of victimhood, self-sabotage, and self-doubt, I kept myself in a prison of my own making. I doubted the light I had within myself by constantly giving away my power.
Once I healed my gut through getting diagnosed with celiac disease and going gluten free, I learned to tap into the magic I had within myself. Now more than ever, I’m fully convinced we all have limitless potential within ourselves with the right tools and support.
With my MA in Counseling Psychology, I have been a therapist, worked in gang prevention and victim services, and was the Executive Director of a highly successful education-based nonprofit. I honestly never dreamt of being an entrepreneur, but I joke that I learned pretty quickly that I’m allergic to offices and crave the freedom that being my own boss allows.
Six years ago, I packed my life in two suitcases and moved to Asia from Denver. I was craving adventure and more freedom. A couple of years later, I found the online coaching space and instantly knew I wanted to be a part of it to help people create lives of freedom and impact. Yet whenI couldn’t sign a client to save my life online, it was incredibly frustrating. Now that I’ve “cracked the code online” I’m incredibly passionate about helping driven entrepreneurs scale their businesses to 6 and multiple 6 figures working from anywhere in the world.
Now that I’m back in Colorado, I still run my online business coaching high achievers, and I also have returned to one of my favorite wealth-building strategies: real estate. I have a short-term rental and a long-term rental and help numerous property owners manage their furnished rentals. Hospitality is in my blood and something I’m great at, so I love being able to provide a space for travelers and those moving to Colorado.
After years of being unable to set myself free, I’m now insanely passionate about giving others the easiest and simplest tools, hacks, and strategies to gain control of your time and your finances. I’m all about helping others be as healthy, wealthy, and happy as they desire.
We’d appreciate any insights you can share with us about selling a business.
I didn’t sell the full business, but I did sell the very first dedicated gluten free app that I built. I learned so much mainly that I could have exercised more patience and sold for more money! I was burnt out and simply wanted an exit strategy. I most certainly don’t regret selling the app, but in hindsight I would have done a lot more due diligence and sold the app for a lot more money. The dedicated gluten free app took me more hours than I would like to count to build. I hired contractors to help me build it, invested tons of time and resources into creating the very first dedicated gluten free locator app around the globe (it had over 1400 restaurants, food trucks, bakeries, and more in 50+ countries). It really was a labor of love and I definitely could have spent more time to make more money when I sold it.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I worked in nonprofits for years, eventually being an Executive Director of one and had such a backstory of “if you truly care about people you won’t charge much money because good hearted people do things because they care, not because of money.” This one has run deep in my bones in terms of money being scare as a resource, that if you care about people you can’t charge premium prices, etc. I grew up around money but there was always so much scarcity in my household. It bled into every area of my life for years because money had been a tool that was not used well in my past. I thought that money was the root of evil in many ways and have had to unlearn this one!
Unlearning these money stories and reprogramming my mind and body with new, empowering stories has been critical as a business owner. I’ve learned that we truly do get to create what we desire and that we have so much more agency and choice than we realize!
