We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carrie Lang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carrie below.
Carrie, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
As a millennial woman, I find myself straddling the line between social media immersion and a more traditional way of living. I remember a time when we didn’t have a solution or a gadget for every little task like we do today. While I appreciate the many benefits of social media, there is a strong push towards excessive buying. This raises concerns about the fate of unused purchases, often ending up stashed away at home or in the trash.
When assisting my clients with their wardrobe selections, I make a conscious effort to educate them on the importance of mindful consumption, decluttering their possessions, and connecting them with resources to redirect unwanted items away from landfills. My services are designed to strategically curate their closets, avoiding duplicates and helping them make the most of what they already own. Gently worn clothes can be donated locally (after thorough research) or recycled through reputable programs. Many clients are unaware of the recycling initiatives offered by major companies, and I only endorse programs that I have personally verified. Ultimately, my goal is to encourage clients to make thoughtful purchases that suit their needs rather than succumbing to every influencer’s recommendation, while also promoting sustainable practices.

Carrie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I founded Duo Personal Styling, my own personal styling business about 2 years ago. The inspiration for my venture originated from assisting friends and family in selecting outfits for various occasions when they were pressed for time or simply not fond of the task.
Initially, I aimed to support women who lacked interest in fashion and shopping. Through interactions with numerous clients, I discovered additional ways to be of help. Building confidence can be quite challenging, especially in a world filled with constant comparisons. My focus shifted towards empowering my clients to embrace and maintain their confidence. The pressure of selecting an outfit can sometimes lead to settling for something that is merely acceptable. I take immense pride and fulfillment from guiding my clients to a place where they truly feel good about themselves. At times, it involves being their cheerleader as they step out of their comfort zone. I am dedicated to listening to my clients, understanding their unique requirements, and suggesting styles that complement their lifestyle without overcrowding their closets.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being myself. I have come to embrace the fact that while there may be others doing similar things, each person connects with us in their unique way. I make it a point to occasionally show up on social media without makeup or in casual attire, staying true to who I am. Outside of styling, I have a genuine passion for volunteering. Whether it involves collaborating with local nonprofits or supporting them in different ways, I ensure that my actions align with my words. Sharing my journey and engaging with fellow entrepreneurs in the community has been instrumental in cultivating meaningful relationships.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
In terms of books, “Lucky Me” by Rich Paul and “You’re A Badass At Making Money” by Jen Sincero. “Lucky Me” is Rich Paul’s memoir, detailing his challenging upbringing in Cleveland and his journey to success, steering clear of common pitfalls in his community by embracing style. His stories highlight how hard work and self-confidence played a role in his achievements. “You’re Badass At Making Money” serves as a great motivator for stepping out of one’s comfort zone and to persist in what you believe in. Additionally, The Skimm’s podcast “9-5ish” has been part of my rotation for nearly six years. The hosts feature interviews with female entrepreneurs, delving into their career beginnings and current accomplishments, which has been a great source of inspiration for me.
