Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carrie Hagee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Carrie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Storyteller Stylist was started on the premise that women want help with styling but do not have time to spend hours and hours in a mall with a personal stylist. Not only is it super expensive, but being able to carve out that time means they don’t do it. I wanted to reach those women who want a style coach but do not want to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars for styling help. Instead, they want to meet virtually and be able to work on their style in their own time.
I have focused 90% of my business on helping professional women on a virtual scale. I can’t tell you how many women love this business model and are grateful that it exists. It’s been life-changing for them. Some of my clients have landed significant positions in their industry, and others have been able to scale their businesses massively. I love my work and how I get to work with amazing women all over the world.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I’ve always loved style and fashion, ever since I can remember. I was always that kid who dressed uniquely and created my mood boards from all the fashion magazines I had subscriptions to. In college, I was excited when I landed a job with a significant retail store. Working in fashion retail for many years providing styling services to women, was gratifying.
Fast forward to now, with more than a decade of styling experience and multiple styling certifications, it’s important to me that my clients feel they are getting the best service and support for their money. My clients are professional women who want styling help but want to be able to do so virtually and at a time that is convenient for them.
I offer a variety of virtual styling packages: Virtual Shopping, Virtual Photoshoot Styling, Virtual Style Guide: Body Shape Assessment, Wardrobe Edit and Style Board with shoppable links, Virtual Wardrobe Planner, and a Monthly Virtual Style Coaching Membership. I also offer a complimentary style consultation call to help determine which package is best for your styling needs.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve told this story several times to new business owners because it speaks to the struggles we can face early on but is a reminder that if we stay the course and don’t let these setbacks defeat us, we can truly become who we are meant to be.
Early in my business, I did everything myself because I wanted to learn how it all worked along the way. Well, that proved to be a significant challenge! I put my entire website together, which I had never done before. I was close to launching it when one day, I somehow deleted three months of work in a matter of minutes!
I cried a lot! That night I felt like giving up. I wasn’t sure how I could pick myself up and all the self-doubt that went along with it. I told myself that maybe it was a sign I wasn’t cut out for this. However, the following day as I was waking up, I heard a voice say, “stay the course.” So, I grabbed a cup of coffee, sat down at my computer, and just started typing on a fresh new website. And you know what? My new website ended up being better than the first one!
I think everyone goes through struggles at times, but what you learn from those times and the gratitude of learning gets you to the other side.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
After launching my business in 2018, it became apparent that many women were starting businesses or scaling their current businesses and wanted help with their outfits for their brand photoshoots. When photographers reached out to me to see if I could assist their clients with what to wear, I jumped on the opportunity because I knew the importance of how your outfit needs to match your brand and your style personality for them to have the most authentic photo.
This translated to today, working with several brand photographers, styling their brand clients virtually, and putting together a Wardrobe Planner for their photoshoots, so they show up to the shoot ready to go, knowing exactly what they are going to wear for each venue that fits their brand and their authentic style. Because this is all done virtually, I don’t have to visit the set or meet you in person. It’s all done and prepared ahead of the shoot; the clients love this service!
I do want to mention that it takes a specifically trained stylist in virtual styling to be able to do this accurately. It’s one of my favorite specialties!
