We recently connected with Carrie Gibson and have shared our conversation below.
Appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I am an actor and a writer. Due to the effect of the writer’s strike, my usual work of preparing self taping auditions and shooting jobs has almost disappeared. Right at the time where I felt my career gaining momentum, especially after a sweet recurring role on Barry, I suddenly looked at a lot of empty space. Out of that empty space came the idea to produce one of my original screenplays that I wrote with my writing partner of 25 years, and create a short as a proof of concept and to start telling an important story. The short, Squeeze, is about how my writing partner raised his son on the spectrum and how a wrestling coach changed both of their lives. Producing is the biggest challenge I have faced in a long time and it is filled with risk. We are launching a crowdfunding campaign on Seed and Spark on July 10th. A lot of people are already involved and hoping we raise the budget. Fingers crossed.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
My advice for actors and writers alike is to be persistent and consistent. Keep doing the work in whatever way you can. Go out and get involved, join hte picket lines and support each other. There are ways now for actors to build a sense of community through sites like We Audition where I coach and read for other actors all over the world. Embrace self taping as ana ctor and use it to meet new actors who can read for you on We Audition.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My story of resilience happened several years ago when I thought I would leave the profession. I discovered part way through graduate school to become a teacher that I loved acting too much to leave it. When I returned, I had a completely different attitude. I was ready to do whatever it takes. That has served me well. My willingness to be available even on vacation has really allowed me to build a great body of work that can only grow from here.
