We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carretta Wilson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Carretta, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
If I could go back in time, I definitely would have started my business sooner because at this time in my life I would be well into the teaching phase of my business. The fact that it takes time to scale is an under statement, especially for me because I am an introvert so it has taken me a bit longer than I would have hoped to get started. I was working as an University Counselor and then came unexpected layoffs. But, everything happens for a reason and that is how my passion was uncovered. I have a love for a great smelling home and my love for handmade products was making was born. I would have been able to explore more opportunities to grow and I would be in a better position now. I would have years under my belt and business credit would be something that would have me in a better situation for scaling. I would be in a position to have employees by now if I would have started soon. Part of my goal for my business is to grow my business so that I can employ others from the community.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am named after Coretta Scott King (wife of Martin Luther King, Jr.) and I am proud of that. I am an introvert but my confidence pour out of my pores when I have the opportunity to talk about my products. I love having products that invoke happiness and memories in others. I love teaching others. I bought a candle and it was the birth of my life of creations, I started making candles because my boyfriend and I purchased a very expensive scented candle and after just a few minutes of burning, the candle exploded from improper manufacturing. Now that I am more experienced in the steps in creating candles, I understand where the error occurred, What problems I solve for my clients range from beard issues (patchy areas, dry and flaky, unable to see growth). For those clients that have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, I have a SLEEP Pillow Spray that can promote a deep sleep that leaves you feeling refreshed in the morning. What I am most proud of is my SLEEP Pillow Spray, because it is important for us to get a good nights sleep and my sleep spray can assist in that. I love helping others and I developed this sleep spray because I have an active mind from all the activity throughout my day and I needed something to help me fall asleep because counting sheep never worked for me. I create my products with a lot of love, my goal is for my clients to enjoy my products as much as I enjoyed creating each one.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
I manufacture my own products and what’s great about that for me is the fact that I am in total control. I am a person that is always looking to improve my product ingredients and packaging. That’s why I need to be a millionaire already, so I can buy exactly what I want to for my branding. Again, I got started because I wanted to treat myself and the item I bought was defective. My boyfriend had a lot of confidence in me and my abilities and told me, he thinks I can start to making my own and BOSSPlus Life was crafted. I create my own products and part of my business’ future is growth by manufacturing for others that wish to expand their lines. The lessons I have learned along the way with manufacturing is that you are never finished learning. A slight change in your formula or process and alter the end result. Anyone can produce a product, but you have to have the love to make sure that it is make to perform correctly. So many people are amazed when I explain that their candles are not suppose to have the big hole down the center as it burns. Everyday I learn something new, and I am loving every minute of this journey. I hope to inspire someone else with my tenacity and passion.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation within my market is the fact that I love quality. And if I like quality for myself, I want quality for my clients because my brand is an extension of me personal. This is important in building my clientele because my customers trust me and my products performance when I announce another product. They purchase, simply off the performance facts I convey when speaking of a new products. If I wouldn’t use it myself, I don’t sell it.
