We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carra Roots. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carra below.
Carra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?
I didn’t expect to not love what I do anymore. Talk about having a passion to go full-time as an entrepreneur, finally working with people that you wanted to, and then after some time realizing that you don’t want to do it anymore. No one ever really talks about the transitional phases in businesses. People are loud with the new ideas but for me having to navigate that space of growth really threw me off.
It wasn’t that I was no longer good at my business, it was the fact that I was growing. I had learned and gained experience so much so that the surface-level services no longer fulfilled me. Taking time to reflect and actually address those frustrations was key in moving my business forward. I had to silence the noise of social media and even the experts and say, I created this business to do what I love and solve a problem. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to be new. But no matter what, it will require you to show up
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always said that I capture people with my camera and their ideas with my mind. I own a creative agency, Created For You Only. There, we provide service providers with creative solutions to help tell their stories. In such a digital world where people have to show up now more than ever, it’s important to be able to craft a story that will connect to your audience. That’s where I come in.
Over the years, I have supported many service providers and organization leaders, and have even been one myself. In that time, I have learned what is needed to function and present well wherever content leads the consumer. So whether you’re in need of visuals, strategy, or content assistance, I got you.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Pivoting in business is like dealing with growth and grief at the same time. It’s a beautiful thing to understand that you are in a new space. You finally understand what you want to do at a greater capacity. For me, the grief part snuck up on me when I had to turn down clients who no longer aligned with the direction I was taking my business. Clients that I had serviced before or who may have been recommended had to be turned away.
In the midst of dealing with those feelings, I had to also honor the new direction that I was now going. You will have to understand your new worth. Sometimes it’ll take thinking of how frustrated you get when doing those things that no longer serve you. There will be a small adjustment period, but you will get through it.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Customer service and providing excellent work are things that helped build my reputation. When people get work done by you, they have to connect with you first. Being friendly and understanding of their needs was super helpful in my process of building relationships with clients. After that, the work spoke for itself, and then my clientele spoke for me. By providing the work that I did, they were elated to share who did the work for them. As a service provider, you tend to want things to be perfect, however, your consumer wants their problems solved. Focus on them.
