Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carolyn Phung. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Carolyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents are immigrants from Vietnam. My mother Vietnamese and my father Chinese. They both came to America with the promise of a better life. Growing up, I didn’t see their struggles of being an immigrant with very little English and the financial burden of raising a family. My father, the primarily caretaker worked long hours to provide us with the means of the “American Dream”. Through his resilience, it taught me -yes if we worked hard, we could accomplish our goals, no matter how long and how difficult the task may be.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I wish I could tell you that I grew up spiritually aware and was always Awake, but I can’t. My journey started when my good friend passed away almost four years ago of esophageal cancer. I wanted to know where he went in the afterlife, I wanted to know if he was still in pain and suffering or was, he safe, and healthy and most importantly happy. I didn’t realize at the time that this pain sparked my interest in the spiritual realm, in which I connected with my childhood friend, Melanie Esperon of Reiki Room San Diego, where she specializes in blended intuition, reiki energy and sound healing. Through her wisdom, guidance, and teachings, I understood that there were many ways to heal the heart and soul, what made sense and worked best for me was spiritually being connected to the Universe. Healing through Reiki. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation, which also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress. If “life force energy” is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
Through my own pain and healing I felt the calling to help others heal. I started my own business called Road to Reiki. I am a certified Reiki Master; I teach and provide Reiki but not only that I am also a spiritual creator where I make tools to help elevate one’s spiritual practices that are sold across San Diego. I make candles, smudge sprays, jewelry and bath soaks.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
That our stories and roads is ours to take. Each road you take brings you back to where your soul is at home. Without the trials and tribulations, tears, and heartbreak you wouldn’t have learned what you needed to in this lifetime. So, I would have to say, I wouldn’t want to “unlearn” anything. What we go through as humans, shapes and molds us to who we are. We are always evolving and growing into a better version of ourselves.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I would have to say being your true authentic self. Staying humbled and grateful to each soul you come in contact with.
