We were lucky to catch up with Carolyn Nikkanen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Carolyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
The important lesson I learned prior to me opening my company, I worked for an amazing company that taught me to show respect, and treat everyone like an individual, and nobody was above anyone, the bosses, were the absolute best, they treated their employees with so much gratitude and respect. I brought this knowledge into my company and it has worked.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am the owner of Carolyns Model and Talent agency, started it. 40 years ago, and it has grown into such an amazing company, We represent all ages, from babies, children, teens, adults and seniors, Experienced and non experience both union and non union for film, television series, commercials and print. I have always worked through difficult times, by adapting to change, and looking at new programs and venues, to help make the business what is today, The company runs like a well oil machine, and it took many years of hard work, to get it there, nothing is easy. I have dedicated 7 days a week night a day to the business to make it what it is today. My employees and my self get such joy when we see our talent get booked for a feature film, or tv series, or commercials. I love making talents dreams come true.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I started my business 40 years ago, and as I mentioned it was challenging at times, being a single mom with two children, trying to provide a stable life, manage employees and try to grow the business. I was diagnosed in 1995. with breast cancer, and had a mastectomy at age 35, had chemo , lost all my hair, and still went into work every day, sick or not. Nothing stopped me. Following that, my cancer came back 5 times, within years after. and just when you think things are going great, a bump in the road happens. I did manage to get through all the bumps, and so far today are in good health. It is so imporant, to always remain humble, grateful, and kind as life can throw many curve balls, and you have to be prepared to accept the challenges and grow from that. Every challenge makes us stronger and more resilient.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I cannot stress enough, how important building a good strong presence on social media. It is imperative, to keep your social media professional both business and personal looking good. Social media is what helps get your message accross, we post every single day, and never miss a day. There are programs, such as Hopper HQ. that has made that so much more streamlined. We don’t find any pressure with social media at all, we just keep it very professional at all times.
