Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carolyn Moss. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Carolyn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
When I started my Pampered Chef business back in the fall of 2003, there was no Facebook and there certainly was no such thing as “virtual parties.” We were an in-home party-plan business model. We went into people’s homes and demonstrated our products by preparing various recipes for groups of people and showcasing our cooking tools.
Then 2020 happened.
I was forced to either go out of business altogether, or pivot my business to doing online/virtual parties through Facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger. Thankfully I was able to make the transition smoothly and successfully. Now, in 2022, Facebook is throwing monkey wrenches at us left, right and backwards making it challenging to run parties on their platform. But, no worries, as Pampered Chef has created a proprietary platform for us, called Table, so we can run our parties online, no longer reliant on Facebook. Problem solved.
One of the biggest things I have learned in being a small business owner is that flexibility and open-mindedness is everything. We have to be willing to roll with the punches and make changes as the world changes.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have two amazing sons, ages 20 and 23. My big guy is in graduate school out of state. My baby is in college a few hours away, but thanks to Covid-19 delaying his departure for the dorms, we got to enjoy several extra months together (See? There’s always a silver lining – even in the midst of a pandemic).
I started my Pampered Chef business when my boys were 5 years old and 20 months old. I took a crazy leap of faith as a scared single mom, hoping to simply be able to make ends meet. I had no idea back then that this business would shower me with so many gifts.
Thanks to Pampered Chef I’ve been able to make ends meet and then some. Pampered Chef has helped me grow into the strong and independent person that I am today. But, it’s so much more than that.
Thanks to Pampered Chef, I was able to drop everything and run to be with my parents when my dad had quadruple bypass surgery.
Thanks to Pampered Chef I was able to spend two weeks by my mother’s side in the ICU as she battled a horrible infection and countless days, weeks and months hovering over her like a lioness protecting her cub as she recovered…and still bring in a solid income all the while.
Thanks to Pampered Chef I’ve been able to be here to raise my boys, to be their room mom, team mom, listening mom, PTA mom, nagging mom, taxi mom, overprotective helicopter mom (yes, I’ll admit it).
As my kids spread their wings and my parents continue to age, I can’t help but look back and feel so incredibly lucky and so very thankful for what this business has really given me. It’s given me the gift of time; time to spend with those I love the most and with whom I know my time is limited. You can never put a price tag on a gift like that.
If you need a little extra cash, more time with the people you love, or just need a little extra fun, let’s talk! I would love to share more about why this is the best company to represent. I know you won’t regret it! :)
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I wouldn’t necessarily call it a “strategy” for growing my clientele, but I do believe I have found the success that I have because of my authentic, genuine care for people. We are a relationships-based business. We do not just sell a product to a customer and walk away. I pride myself on customer care. I invest time and energy into getting to know my customers as people, learning their needs and challenges so I can help them resolve their cooking pain-points. But I also take the time to get to know them as people, on a personal level. That is one of my favorite parts of this business and is one that I feel strongly has lead to my success.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me is and always has been word of mouth. When people are happy with the service they receive, they tell a few friends. When people are unhappy with the service they receive, they tell anyone who will listen. So I work very hard to make sure to always provide the absolute best service I possible can. I do this by following up with my customers to make sure they are happy with their purchase, to see if they need recipes or tips on how to use a new product and I make sure to let them know I am available for any and all of their kitchen and entertaining needs.
