We were lucky to catch up with Carolyn Miller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Carolyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
When I was 27, I took my first ever trip to Nashville. Hooked was an understatement. Nashville became like a drug I couldn’t get enough of! It’s called Music City for a reason and it really is Disney World for the musician/artist/creative. I put out original music for the first time when I was 29 and haven’t looked back since. Not living in Nashville, not growing up on country music, not beginning this venture until I was nearing 30 might’ve been considered a “risk” by most. I’m a firm believer that “no dream is too big” and if someone else can do it, why can’t you? I’m so glad I’ve followed my heart. In the few short years since then, I’ve played stages as large as 30,000, sang in arenas, heard my songs on the radio, performed with my favorite artists (hi Lee Brice!), and have even had my name on a bill next to my personal hero, Carrie Underwood. It’s been a wild ride and I feel like it’s truly just getting started!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m from Long Island, NY and started working professionally in show biz at age 8. I grew up doing theatre, voiceovers, commercials, film, tv, etc. I went to the Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music — I think going to a conservatory and studying acting, singing, dancing, etc as part of my musical theatre major has had a huge impact in my artistry. I love telling stories and really enjoy crafting a “show” with big numbers, intimate moments, costume changes….all like a musical!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’m still trying to figure it out! Haha it’s a wild beast. I have about 100,000 followers now (7ok TikTok, 30k Instagram). Pay attention to the people that have a large following. What kind of content are they doing? What works? Watch the videos that go viral. Notice the captions or hashtags. Investigate what the account’s posting frequency is. I try to study those who are successful, take notes, and then put my spin on things.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I love Ari Herstand’s podcast, blog, and book (“How to Make It in the New Music Business”). Coming into the music business, I knew NOTHING. I didn’t know what a “wedge” was or the difference between mixing and mastering. I had to google “what does FOH” mean on a show advance and so many other basic things. I’ve learned so much through him and I continue to educate myself as much as I can through his courses.
