We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carolyn Mcguire. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with CAROLYN below.
CAROLYN, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
The concept of IM is completely unique, as we are the only old school weightlifting studio, done in a group, in LA….maybe even the world! Lol. Before IM, if you wanted (needed) to start strength training, you either needed to go pay a trainer that specialized in strength training $120+ a session, or go to a gym and figure it out for yourself. Iron Method is like personal training but at around $20 a session and in a group of supportive, positive people in the same pursuit. But my favorite part is the fact that strength is relative. On any given day, you will see a buff 45 year old man heavy lifting right next to a 78 year old woman. Both working to their own max with zero judgement or expectations. Its really beautiful to watch everyone, so different but all with the same goals. So as far as how my business has scaled so fast in the past 3 years… the answer comes in 3 key points.
1. I lead this business with kindness and positivity…which has created a safe, fun, and amazing community.
2. We don’t cater to the typical..young, aesthetically driven people. Instead, we cater to the untapped market of people over 40 that need help with hormones, bone density, fat loss, muscle building, stress reduction, injury prevention, form correction, muscle imbalances, and the list goes on!
3. We treat every person like they are our only client, offering them all the care they need and deserve.
We are a niche that needs to AND WILL keep growing!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I came from very humble beginning and started my fitness journey as a 200lb animal trainer that joined a gym to get the weight off. Struggling with an eating disorder (bulimia) since I was a teenager, it was quite the journey to get the weight off and find the balance of long term health and wellness. I started with spinning where I excelled so fast that I became one of the top spin instructors in LA, and taught for over 15 years. While spinning my life away, I became group class & personal trainer certified, and started the chapter of teaching various formats and training people with various goals.
As a successful animal and human trainer, I still struggled greatly with my body composition and eating disorder. I felt defeated with how no matter how much I worked out and ate “right”, I could never reach my goals. Cut to a DECADE later when I fell into a 60 day challenge. 60 days – 5 days a week of lifting heavy weights – eating over 140 grams of protein a day – & cutting out the cardio. Basically …working out less, heavier, cutting out and shit, and upping my protein. My results? In 60 days, My body looked COMPLETELY different. I lost almost 10% body fat. Gained 4 lbs of muscle. And my scale only went down 3 lbs. It was then that I forever changed the way I view fitness, nutrition and overall wellness.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During the pandemic I opened a weightlifting zoom company called the sweat connection. I hired trainers who could barely pay their bills, to teach from their homes like I was. A growing community of people all lifted every day for 2 years and with the money I saved, I was able to open what is not Iron Method.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think the above story does it.
