We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carolyn Coleman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carolyn below.
Carolyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you ever had an amazing boss, mentor or leader leading you? Can you us a story or anecdote that helps illustrate why this person was such a great leader and the impact they had on you or their team?
She was a team leader and a true mentor. She never asked you to do anything she would not do. She was a teacher at heart. She taught as we worked, it was never you do this and I will be down the hall if you need me. She always asked are you comfortable doing this task or do you need help. She never grew tired of me or anyone else asking her questions.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a registered nurse and have been in nursing for about 38 years most of those years I was employed as an intensive care nurse. I love what I do. I am currently a nurse case manager. Being a practicing nurse has helped me to be a good case manager. As a Case manager I assess, evaluate and format a plan of action to meet a patient/client’s healthcare needs especially regarding discharge planning. Case Managers work with other ancillary services for the common goal of a safe discharge for the patient. We make tentative plans, because their medical issues can change and that changes the initial plan. What I enjoy about being a case manager is teaching patients, and their families about their health compliance and potential expectation so they can have the best possible outcomes. I am also an author, I started that journey in 2014 as a stress relief from running for a local political office. I write fiction romantic/comedy which turned into a 5-part series. I have also co-authored three anthologies which were #1 best sellers, and two were also international best sellers the anthologies are Christian-based. Writing for me is cathartic. Who ever thought in 2014, I would have the title of #1 best seller author and Podcast host. Podcast hosting started for me in summer 2023, my objective: is to give a platform to those who would not ordinarily have an available platform to to speak regarding their brand or business.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
You have to have a passion for what you do. When you love what you do, it makes work seem easy. As a former professor told me many years ago, if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life. It took me a while to understand what the professor meant. But I finally understood.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
We were told the company was going to close. I was doing disease management at time. I enjoyed it. The company gave us a month’s notice. I decided I wanted to remain in disease management or something similar. I went back into the hospital part-time until my desired position presented itself. It was not hard to pivot back into intensive care nursing. I made up my mind, I was going to make my own schedule. Nothing full time until the best position came my way.
