Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carolyn Busby. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Carolyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk I have taken was betting on myself, starting my business, and leaving nursing. This was a super scary step and honestly had me thinking I was having a midlife crisis. Picture it, the middle of COVID, the world is on lock down and we are all unsure of the future. This was the time that I chose to leave my nursing career. There were several things that at my core I no longer resonated with in nursing. I really enjoyed the one-on-one connections with my patients, educating them and just caring for them. As time has gone on, I felt that nursing had gotten away from genuinely caring for patients to being more concerned with paperwork and documenting. Things became rushed. You don’t know your doctor very well anymore and you certainly don’t know your nurse. I was growing more and more unhappy with my position and eventually took some time off. With that brief time off I had a discussion with my spouse, and we decided I was not going to return. But what do I do now? I had been a nurse my entire adult life. But I also knew there was way more out there. I also decided if I was going to leave then I was going to try to do my own thing. Thus, I started taking training related to post op, body contour, IV hydration eventually and so many more. With these certifications, prayer, confidence and perhaps a bit of naivety, I opened Pristine Body and Wellness, my med spa. And the rest is history!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Carolyn Busby and I am the owner of Pristine Body and Wellness. We are a med spa located in Killeen, Texas. I affectionately refer to my spa as a self-care spa. We cater to the woman who have taken care of everything and everyone else and is now ready to take care of/find/ and put herself first. We offer weight management programs, IV Hydration, Post Op Care, Vaginal Rejuvenation, and Body Contour. We also offer accompanying products such as B-12 shots, fat burner shots, weight loss drops, etc. We pride ourselves in providing a warm inviting environment that makes our customers feel at home and relaxed. One of my proudest accomplishments thus far was being nominated for Best Nurse, Rookie of the Year, and Best Post Op Care at the 7th Annual Black Spa Awards. We actually took home the prize for Best Post Op. We would love to serve you and if you are not in Texas, no worries, our products can be ordered on our website.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being that I have been a Nurse for the last almost 20 years, the medical aspect of the business is pretty much second nature. However, the business aspect, not so much. I found a fellow nurse who was further ahead in business than me and presented herself as trustworthy and helpful. Fast forward, I ended up out of thousands of dollars and then still had to find a medical director in order to start my med spa. I’ve only been in business a year and some change so something like that was a serious blow. But I did not allow that to stop me. I found an amazing medical director, and am ready to embark on the newest chapter on this journey.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I did a complete pivot from nursing to spa owner. Though it is very different from nursing, I believe fundamentally, It allows me to still be able to pour into my customers in the way that I was able to in my early nursing career. I just now have the blessing of doing it in my own space listening to a little music.
