We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Caroline Sharpnack a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Caroline, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
One of the biggest trends I’ve been seeing build up in interior photography is hiring a stylist or offering styling services for photo shoots. More interior designers are realizing the importance of having a designated stylist on set to create that extra magical touch in order to really bring each photo to life. Not only can a stylist help perfect the details of an image, but they also relieve the designer from the stress and pressure of doing all of the styling themselves. It can be really beneficial to have someone who is trained to see a space with an editorial eye, focusing on how things look through the camera lens vs. when you walk into the room. Stylists bring a unique perspective and can be a crucial part to telling the story of a space through photos.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started photographing around age thirteen when I was given my grandfather’s film camera. I decided to study photography in college, and towards the end of my time there, I developed a deeper interest in interiors (I’ve always loved interior design) and I started to think about what it would be like to pursue that niche. After college, I freelanced for companies like Airbnb and Houzz, shooting as many homes as I could (and making connections, too) to build my portfolio. I finally took my photography business full-time in September 2020.
As an Interior Photographer, I create images for interior designers, builders and architects with an eye for detail, a lived-in approach and a strong focus on natural light. I hold value in collaborating closely with my clients in order to tell the story of a home.
I’m proud and grateful that my clients trust me to capture their work, and I don’t take that responsibility lightly. My goal is always to create beautiful photos that embody my client’s vision of their projects, that they can also be extremely proud of.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
The best resources are other creatives in your industry. Never underestimate the power of creating relationships with people who do the same work as you. You can always learn from others, and it’s so helpful to have people on the same path as you who you can ask questions, learn from and also be a resource yourself.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Word of mouth has been the most effective growth strategy for me, and the best way to ensure that clients keep recommending me is to always strive to create an incredible client experience. I want my clients to be happy with my work above all else, and a happy client is more likely to recommend you to another future potential client.
