A SMART Dog Rescue Love Story: Jojo and Rebel’s Journey to Friendship and Health

The story of Jojo and Rebel, two resilient dogs brought together by SMART Dog Rescue, is a testament to the power of second chances. Both dogs were abandoned, both needed extensive medical care, and both found comfort and healing in each other’s companionship. This is their love story, a journey from hardship to happiness.

Jojo’s Struggle: Malnourished, Heartworms, and Alone

Jojo’s story begins with pain and abandonment. Found emaciated and malnourished, she was a mere shadow of what a dog should be. Her ribs were visible and she was burdened a huge dog collar with a heavy padlock chained in the woods. Her health issues were dire—Jojo was diagnosed with heartworms, a life-threatening condition that affects the heart and lungs, and she was struggling to fight off infections as well. It was clear that her recovery would be a long and difficult road. But even in her state of desperation, Jojo’s eyes held a quiet strength and resilience that made the rescue team believe in her ability to heal.

Rebel’s Battle: Kidney Stones, Urinary Struggles, and Ear Infections

Rebel’s story was equally heartbreaking. Found with severe kidney stones, Rebel could barely urinate and was crying from the pain. His condition was urgent—if the stones were not treated, they could cause irreversible damage. On top of that, Rebel had severe ear infections, which caused him constant discomfort. Rebel, a dog who had suffered both physically and emotionally, was understandably wary of everyone around him. Yet, beneath his anxious exterior was a heart eager for love and care.

SMART Dog Rescue: The First Step Toward Healing

Both Jojo and Rebel were rescued by SMART and brought to a dedicated team of veterinarians at East Coast Animal Hospital and began their journey of healing. Jojo underwent immediate treatment for her heartworms, a lengthy process requiring medication and strict care. Her malnourished body was given the nourishment it desperately needed, and slowly, her strength began to return. But Jojo’s journey wasn’t just physical—it was emotional. After everything she had endured, it was hard for Jojo to trust again. But her fosters, Carrie and Todd and then also her new parents showed her the patience and love she needed to start her healing and new life.

Meanwhile, Rebel was given the urgent care he needed for his kidney stones. He underwent surgery to remove the stones, and with the proper care and medication, his urinary struggles were soon alleviated. His ear infections, too, were treated, but the pain of past trauma lingered in his heart. Rebel was a dog who needed time to trust, time to feel safe and loved and he found that with his fosters, Teri and Theresa, his new furever family.

A Bond Forms: Two Souls, Healing Together

As Jojo and Rebel went through their respective treatments, something beautiful started to blossom. Their new owners decided to introduce them to one another, and though they were both unsure at first, they began to form a bond that would change their lives forever.

It didn’t take long for them to become best friends. Jojo, with her quiet resilience, gently nudged Rebel to show him that the world could still be a safe place. Rebel, in turn, offered Jojo a sense of calm, proving that even the most anxious hearts could heal with time and love. Together, they discovered that they weren’t alone anymore—they had each other, and that was enough to restore their faith in the kindness of the world.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?

I wouldn’t change a thing about helping the animals. They have brought so much joy and love into my life. Watching the abused and neglected dogs learn to trust again is heartfelt.
