We recently connected with Caroline Hagan and have shared our conversation below.
Caroline, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
As I began my current series of paintings based on quilts and their patterns, I was initially interested in an exploration of color, pattern, and the visual language of quilt design. I was drawn to their structure and repetition. As I shared the work viewers began connecting the paintings to personal memories-of grandmothers, mothers and the act of quilting itself. These responses revealed an unexpected layer, shifting the work beyond formal study into something more collective and emotional.

Caroline, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I became interested in art in high school under the guidance of a teacher who both challenged and supported me. Since then I have spent 20 plus years working as an artist and an art educator.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
What I value most in my practice is the opportunity to take on new challenges and continually discover new ways of thinking.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the expectation that art should come easily or resolve into perfection.
