We recently connected with Carolina De Athey and have shared our conversation below.
Carolina, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
Well, this situation happened very recently. I needed it to re-shoot a music video super fast because of a very unfortunate situation that happened with my original music video and I didn’t know what to do. I reached out to some professionals I know but every single door was closed. And I don’t know, I think where I thought I’d find that support and kindness I didn’t and then director Ricardo Moreno was the one who came to my rescue. And he did it so kindly and so gracefully that is one of those things that I will never forget! And it’s not like he’s new in the game or a “wanna be”. He is a name director with an extensive resume, who’s worked with major names in the music industry and I’m just so happy and humbled to have him direct Besame. And he was so incredibly fun and funny to work with and he brought Kurt Jones too, who is another extremely talented artist. This was my second time working with Ricardo and third time working with Kurt and I so love them and I hope we will continue to work together over and over again. And the other person that was already involved in the production of this music video and stepped in with her team with such great positive energy and absolutely open arms was producer Lynn Tang and I really have a lot to thank her. She is so incredible and I love her too!!
But I think that is one of the kindest things someone or a group of people has done for me and I’m extremely grateful!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I actually got into the industry through modeling. I was already writing music but I hadn’t published it yet. I had an opportunity to work as a model and I took it. And so after that I became interested and I then attended a modeling camp with Page Parkes for modeling and acting as well. I started with print but ended up doing runway as well. The camp was also for commercial acting and after that I got involved with theatrical acting. It took me a couple of years to be able to publish my first song and put a music video out.
In a nutshell, I’m an artist! I think that is the word that can better describe me because I’m an actress, singer-songwriter, model and influencer and hopefully one day I’ll have a fashion brand. Big dreams right, cause why not?!
I love fashion and it’s definitely a part of my everyday life!
I think what I’m most proud of is that I’ve written and published music! I think I’m proud of that because it belongs to me.
I wrote the lyrics and the melody and it’s out there. I’m also proud of my tight short that I also wrote, acted and directed and I got an Award for it. I wanted to “test the waters” and I started with a tight short. I feel proud of that! I’m proud of BIONIC BEAUTY! I play ANA and Sabrina Phillips in this Pilot by Buddy Chambers and I’m proud of it because I think BIONIC BEAUTY is Awesome! It’s a project I believe in and I’m proud to have been cast as the lead actress as it’s a fantastic role, project and concept and so fun to play! I’m proud that I wake up everyday and find motivation and inspiration to pursue my dreams in such a cut throat industry.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yea, I like to think so! I believe every artist should have some sort of goal or mission because that is what empowers and motivates the artist. And mostly during bad times which we go through all the time. If you don’t believe you will be able to use your career to make a difference, share positivity and one day be able to give back, what else is there? There are topics very close to my heart. Topics that I feel passionate about and I hope to be able to work on one day and share it in an art form. These subjects and ideas definitely motivate me to keep going.
I also have other things in my mind that I would like to work on that are more hands on. Like actually giving back to certain causes I feel passionate about it.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Well, my last music video is an example of that.
I was approached by an individual who offered to direct my music video and he told me an artist ( a famous artist) had screwed him over before and so now he wanted to do everything professionally and his way because he needed his director credit. To make a very long story short he committed to several things and didn’t come up with anything aside from showing up late and shooting the video alone. I came up with pretty much everything else but after 50 weeks with the footage he said he lost all footage and that was that. Possibly the most unprofessional individual I’ve dealt with and that was very unmotivating. To see someone who calls himself a director, a storyteller and an artist treat other artists with no respect or consideration was incredibly disheartening and very sad.
It was basically a complete waste of time, money, energy and resources.
Still I had to get it done in a very short amount of time and because miracles do happen (as I mentioned earlier in this interview) and special people do exist, I was able to get it done. A few very talented and experienced professionals jumped in to help me out and I never saw that coming. So the journey was amazing and it taught me that sometimes you just need to reach out and ask for help as long as you believe in yourself and your project. That is very important!
