We recently connected with Carol Teitelbaum and have shared our conversation below.
Carol, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I am a person with a very busy life, a full time private practice, Husband, Children, Grandchildren, speaker at conferences. one morning, fifteen years ago I awoke with the message of what I was going to do next in my life. I said to my Higher Power, I don’t have time for that. The message would not go away. It was you are going to help men who have been sexually abused.
I had no idea how I was going to do that. I planned a conference, people came. I asked renowned speakers like John Bradshaw, John Lee, Patrick Carnes, if they would work for a reduced fee, they did. Then the message was ask Dave Pelzer, the author of the best selling book, A Child Called I, to be a speaker. The first year I did not hear back, the second year I did he spoke at our conference and his payment was a flag 4 x 6, that is all he wanted. The rest is history, we are now in our 15th year and our conference is 3/8/24 and Dave is back.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Now in our 15th year, our annual conference is March 8, 2024 at St. Margaret’s Church in Palm Desert, California
Our Keynote speaker, Dave Pelzer, is Author of Best Selling Book, A Child Called It. John Lee, best selling author of The Flying Boy,
Jerry Moe, International advocate and author for children and families living in addiction. Robert Stone who came forward to bring charges against a college doctor who abused over 1000 boys, Me, Carol Teitelbaum, Licensed MFT since 1985.
Daniel Marquez, a courage healer who will share his story.
I have a full time private practice and see lots of men who were abused as children, as well as women and couples.
I speak at conferences, colleges, schools, recovery centers. Co- authored two books and written several magazine articles.
I also offer free group therapy for men. see www.creativechangeconferences.com
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I was a mom, two children, husband, assorted pets, owned a bookkeeping business, and was going to school, and doing an internship. I fell asleep often with a book on my face, sometimes finding myself driving to class when it occurred to me I was supposed to see clients that night, only to turn around and go to the office. I never gave up. I saw the goal I wanted and the rest is history.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Absolutely, it is something I love and feel very passionate about.
