We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carol Rodriguez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Carol , appreciate you joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
.
Also, I think the biggest life changing risk I’ve taken was to freelance and not have a full-time job under a management. Once I was fired from my last job due to Covid, I made myself clear that I would try for once the fact of freelancing and sustain myself with my business. And forward to almost 5 years after this, I stand with a small business created last 2023 as a Content Creator for weddings at Puerto Rico. I also freelance doing other wedding assignments on the industry which had kept me growing my business a little more than expected for the time it’s been live.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My passion for the wedding industry emerged at college, after an event management course I took back in the days. I stood with the idea of becoming 2 things: A food and beverage manager so I can manage these types of events from the back of the house or a wedding planner to develop the process from the beginning.
Submitted my resume to a very well known hotel at Old San Juan where they quickly hired me to start working as a hostess for their main restaurant. This allowed me to start familiarizing with the food and beverage process served at the weddings. Little I know, I became a supervisor within time, looking forward to my aspired goal at college, a food and beverage manager for a well known property at Puerto Rico.
Covid never allowed me to reach the position desired as the property closed for an undetermined time. I remember starting to manage a wedding designer’s instagram months before i got laid off. I continued to explore the possibilities within this social media community.
I started growing up my clients as word of mouth spread out. Well known wedding brands from Puerto Rico started reaching out to work with their businesses social medias and finally, a small business was created. Never imagined the possibility of sustaining myself with this but things started getting better. Although I was working for it, I got scared of going live and promoting my business with other companies due to the lack of information and that “scare” feeling you get before creating something big. Finally, the day came for me to risk it all and create what’s known today as Social Weds. A wedding content creator and designer to help elevate your wedding business brand and also, created the service for those couples who would like to have some content from your wedding day,
Never believed such a simple idea could become such a great business. Sometimes it’s all about risking things a little bit and to never give up on goals.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Something I can say about this is to post what you really wish to. Be transparent.
Social media has become a symbol of “perfection” and your clients really want to see who’s really behind the brand they’ll hire.
Add photos from yourself to your feed and interact with your audience (respond messages, comments, stories, etc).
Short reels are another way to grow and start creating presence under your niche as they’re trending right now.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The first one I can mention here will be Atomic Habits.
This book helped me a lot on my business process and still to this day it helps me a lot, mainly with my lack of compromise / time management.
