We were lucky to catch up with CAROL RIDDICK recently and have shared our conversation below.
CAROL, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I was asked by Gerald and Roxanne Veasley to participate in a Nina Simone tribute project. I was intimidated and excited at the same time. It has turned out to be one of the most meaningful projects on which I’ve worked. From this project, I feel inspired, empowered and educated at the same time. What a tremendous gift.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I began working professionally in the music industry when I was a writer and budding artist working at “A Touch of Jazz” (Jazzy Jeff’s studio). I didn’t place any music but I was asked to go on tour with him and Will Smith. It was my first tour and it was the experience of a lifetime; a ten rap group tour. I learned a lot about work ethic, mindfulness, discipline and business. All of what I learned has contributed positively to who I am today and to what I aspire and it is an experience for which I will always be grateful.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and/or creative is that I get to work (in) my gift, which is my ministry, but I get to minister and be ministered to at the same time. It’s rewarding to emote and be felt but to have a shared experience with a listener is a Blessing.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I started in the industry believing that it was all about creativity. I didn’t see past it but after having one bad experience I realized that it is called the “Music Business” for a reason. Business plays such a large part and it’s necessary to make sure you communicate BEFORE creating.
