We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carol Measom a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Carol, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I love being an artist. I have been fortunate enough to have retired from business at the age of 49. This gave me the ability to do whatever I loved, and I discovered my love a painting in my 50’s.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always have creative desires and I’ve always been proficient with the computer as well. So I decided to study graphic design at the Art Institute of Houston when turned 30. Later as the internet surfaced I wanted to learn to create websites which I did. I used those abilities to create websites for businesses and was able to barter a great deal of my wedding with that talent. That along with my past business experience with bookkeeping, sales and marketing helped me and my husband launch and successfully grow a software company until we retired in 2012.
My art is continuing to evolve and change over time. It’s heavily influenced by my surroundings and travel. I love painting with bright bold colors and find painting large paintings to be my favorite.
I am an undisciplined painter and I struggle to make my art more planned and deliberate. Always reaching for perfection that never really happens keeps me coming back to the canvas again and again.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Just giving artists a free place to display their artwork would help them get exposure and introduce them to the community. Being able to display my paintings in a hair salon helped me to sell a lot of paintings and I will always be grateful for that.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to expand my art and my business. I’d like to continue learn mediums that will compliment my paintings. I’m an entrepreneur at heart so I’d like to have a thriving online business with art and home interior decor. I’m also working toward offering online classes for beginner painters in the future.
