We recently connected with Carol Hernandez and have shared our conversation below.
Carol, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you have any advice regarding quality control and maintaining quality as your brand grows?
At Vey’s Painting and Refinishing, we stand out from the rest because of the quality of our work and the relationships we build with our clients. As we begin to grow our business, we continue to look for ways that we can maintain the quality of work, even on those jobs we may send a crew to complete. Vey’s attention to detail is what keeps our clients returning year after year and as we grow we make sure that we are present at each job along the way to ensure that the job is being done as close to perfect as possible.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Vey and I started our business for several reasons. We had just given birth to our second child, Olivia, I wanted to be home for the infant years and Vey had painted for other companies for over 30years and had always wanted to work for herself. I won’t lie, I am a routine, consistency lover, and the idea of not having a regular paycheck or times without any jobs coming in scared me to death. I had a great friend, a business owner herself, who helped me take the leap, and wow! am I glad we did. There are a lot of painting companies out there, but ours stands out. We stand out because we live in the neighborhood, we bring a client’s vision to life , we treat our clients as long time friends, and we love what we do. The thing I am most proud of is where we are today. I can’t pinpoint one thing because there are so many. We love our community and the things they say about us, well, it goes to show that a friendly smile and hard work pays off.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Before beginning Vey’s Painting and Refinishing, I was a elementary school teacher. Around January of 2018 I decided we needed to get creative so that we could afford for me to stay home at least 3 years. I knew I would have a paycheck from June to October (summer break and maternity leave) and so we started Vey’s Painting and Refinishing in March and started saving, saving and saving. By the time my paychecks stopped, we had enough money for those rainy days for when painting just isn’t happening.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media was a challenge for me. I knew I had to create those accounts, but I had no idea how to post, boost, and reach more people daily. My current web designer suggested daily posts and knowing that time is scarce for me, created a social media calendar with content and photos to post each day of the week. I didn’t realize how important social media platforms are until the phones started ringing almost immediately. Platforms such as next-door.com, small business groups created by friends, and neighborhood Facebook pages have all brought great business!
