Alright, Carol thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?

My hero is Steve Jobs because he inspired me to just follow my heart and trust that it would lead me to my passion and purpose. Steve decided to take a calligraphy class which he says was the inspiration for Apple’s beautiful typography, he shared this during a Standford Commencement speech, where he talks about not connecting the dots as to why he decided to take that class until 10 years later.

“You cannot connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something- your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.” – Steve Jobs.

This speech inspired me to follow my intuition and heart, no matter where it may lead me, Now, 14 years later I look back and understand why certain paths, setbacks, and failures happened. It was to lead me to the moment I am living now. That speech changed my life.

Carol, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

My name is Carol Heard and I’ve always had a passion for learning about astrology and learning about the metaphysical world. ’ve been into astrology since I was 16, spending my days sitting in the ‘New Age’ section at Barnes & Nobles. I used astrology to help me discover who I was when I felt lost, which helped navigate me to finding myself, and helped me through college, relationships, love, and my career. As I started my career as a creative, I continued to consult mediums to help guide me to my purpose; then a colleague turned work wifey introduced me to tarot cards. She also introduced me to cleansing and crystals, and I began to dive deeper into learning more about the spiritual realm. After my first tarot reading, I began to feel like it was something I could do myself. So I started pulling tarot cards, which turned into doing readings for my friends and families, and eventually doing tarot readings professionally during the pandemic. While doing readings, my partner always complained about the smoke from clearing the energy with palo santo or blue sage, so I devised a solution while making candles for fun with my daughter inspired by the New Moon in Leo (while everyone else was making banana bread in 2020). After making candles with her I had this idea to put herbs and crystals in my candles and use those to clear the energy when doing readings. That’s how the Magick Shoppe was born and I started selling herb and crystal infused intention candles.

Manifest, Mami was the first candle I created because it was something I needed during my readings. As time went on, I began to create collections for what I needed, which became what every woman needed. Self-Lovery was birthed from the need for love, especially self-love and self-compassion. Healing & Chill was birthed to help restore the rest and relaxation you may need from the daily grind. Hustle, Honey was created to give you an energy boost, whether you are hustling or doing something creative. We make candles that will inspire you to follow your dreams. Our goal is to help women create spaces where they believe in themselves fully and commit to a path of self-discovery, deep connection and true purpose

Our candles are made with 100% natural soy wax, phthalate-free, cruelty-free, and vegan. With careful thought put into each batch, all candles are infused with some herbs grown in-house and herbs found in some of the most magickal places.

I think what sets us apart from other intention candles is that we have multiple scents in each collection (ex: Self=Lovery features Your Flowers, Mai Tai by the Ocean, Date Night, and Grapefruit in Mojito.). We also do special collections and limited drops such as our ShadowWerk and Healing & Love collection. Also, many of our scents are now custom scents mixed by myself that you are only able to find at the Magick Shoppe like Luxury Tax, Sweet 5 a.m. Flow, Your Flowers, and Grapefruit Mojito in Miami. I also, enjoy sourcing herbs from places I visit, recently I soured herbs from New Orleans from several small owned businesses and some moss from the Tree of Life, which is known for having magickal properties.

I am most proud of creating a product that people love, that is true to my passion and purpose, and I get to do something I love everyday.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

I had to unlearn perfectionism. I specialize in branding- I was a social media manager and creative manager for 5 years, so when it came to my own brand I felt like everything needed to be perfect before I launched. But when you are starting a brand with not much capital and you’ve already risked a lot of funds in a previous business you don’t want to pour your eggs all in one basket- especially if this is the 5th company you’ve tried.

So, when I launched The Magick Shoppe candles they weren’t perfect. The labels had these terrible bubbles that were sometimes embarrassing- but people bought them, and they loved them! Till this day the labels aren’t where I would want them to be but if I kept waiting for them to be perfect, I would’ve never launched. Sometimes, we just have to put it out there, things will never be perfect you just gotta put it out there and stop being so critical.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?

Doing pop-ups. It’s given me a chance to understand the customer without much risk. My first pop-up was 35 dollars at a farmer’s market down the street from me. We had a lot of sales on the first day, our social media account grew, and it was our birth of us. Prior to that I created a social media account and was running Facebook and Instagram-boosted ads and I had 4x more sales by doing pop-ups.

It also helps you understand favorite scents from clients..and you get so much valuable feedback from your customers.
