We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carmina León a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Carmina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
SInce I was a child I began to share my artistic intentions to my parents, they are teachers so my house was always full of materials for arts and crafts. At 10 years old my mom took me to an art gallery so I could start learning painting and drawing. I believe that the fact that they had an aproach to my interests where I could be free to create and explore, had everything to do whit the fact that I am now an artist.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My fitst aproach to the professionalization of the arts was at university where I found surrounded by people with artistic intentions, but most of my work is ceramics, which I actually learn to do at Guanajuato when i was a student, ceramics became my main work of study and production because it’s where arts meets science and you turn into al achemist, creating with nature, and i found it fascinating.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes, my primary reason to create is about community and empathy. I wish for people to see my work as a place for reflection upon our feelings and surroundings, to seek for help when our mental health is in danger or to create spaces to feel the way you feel without preassure of society making you fit into a system of productio.n.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It is the freedom I feel to create a world around me that makes me feel safe, and heard.
