We recently connected with Carmen Tucker and have shared our conversation below.
Carmen , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you ever had an amazing boss? What did you learn from them? Maybe you can share a story that illustrates the kind of boss they were or maybe you can share your thoughts on what you think made them an awesome person to work for?
This person literally changed my life. Someone that has helped learn things about business that I didn’t fully understand at the time. Sometimes people give you knowledge that you may not notice the significance of what is being taught to you until years down the line. A constant teacher, a hands on teacher and mentor. Someone that I can and still do call on til this day. Someone that has blessed me with a lifelong gift. Someone I will forever love and pray for.
Carmen , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a self taught treat and cake maker. I’ve always known how to cook and bake but this was never a plan for me. I was given the idea to start my business from a friend. I thought about it and started doing research.. I spent may hours watching YouTube videos and practicing the techniques I learned. I’ve always had awesome customers that would give me a theme or color scheme and allow me to come up with my own design. As time went on I realized the joy I get every time I finish a cake I can’t believe I made it. I also had to learn what items I wanted to focus and stick with. From the beginning I knew I wanted my cakes to look a certain way and I wouldn’t pressure myself to do everything that everyone one else offered. I have my own style and only items that I enjoy making. My number one goal is always to make the customer happy. Number two I have to be happy and enjoy the business. Number three produce a quality product that doesn’t just look god but taste good as well.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
99% of my customers come from Facebook. Don’t feel discouraged if you don’t get a ton of engagement. I never get a lot of engagement on my post but I know my work is being seen and admired because the customers order from me. My customers refer me to friends and family. Also alot of my customers return for more.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn to be patient and practice. Write down all thoughts and set goals. Success does not happen overnight and I’m nowhere near where I plan to be but I won’t give up and I’m going to continue to improve my craft and keep going.
