Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carmen Tellez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Carmen, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?

When I was undergrad as a Biology student at​​ Texas A&M International University I became very consumed with the idea of plant based alternatives and creating my own personal skin care products. Perfecting my formulas over time, I decided to start selling them at my local artisan and farmers markets. I felt an immense amount of joy to be able to use my biology and chemistry studies as well as to express my creative side by making the packaging as aesthetically pleasing as possible. I knew I wanted to further my knowledge of skin care and decided to invest into more education by becoming an Esthetician to also find better solutions to treat and prevent acne. Growing up I saw my brother suffer from far worse acne than I had and was put on a medication called Acutane that caused long term affects to his liver. I knew I wanted a better alternative for myself and anyone that I can help. I know that acne can cause insecurities and stress which is why I also feel so much joy and satisfaction in helping other through a life challenge like this. After obtaining the knowledge I felt necessary to build a skin care brand I was able to launch a professional website featuring a newly released product. A daily gel and fungi based cleanser named the Regenerating Reishi and Rose Gel Cleanser that’s very gentle and beneficial for all skin types. I was able to develop and formulate this product by finding a branding agency that saw my vision and a lab that would work with my small batch size. This new year I partnered with a very talented esthetician-Aponi Balders, and opened the doors to our new Dewy Skin Studio using Dewy Organics products along with other professional grade brands and technology.
It’s exciting that we are offering a very unique space where we focus on a one on one experience with notable hospitality.

Carmen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Not only are we the only skin studio utilizing Fungi and CBD for face and body treatments but we use technology based approach by using high frequency, ultrasonic frequencies, oxygen, and LED light therapy treatments that target numerous skin conditions. Here in the studio we also distill custom herbal blends of hydrosols that we distill during facials for aromatherapy benefits.

Researching and understanding our ingredients at a cellular level we created an exceedingly distinctive formula and facial approach that features ingredients benefiting both aging and acne-prone skin. We partnered with a reputable local laboratory with high-grade quality organic ingredients and services in order to test and refine formulas as well as undergo sample testing, efficacy, and third-party microbial testing studies.
Built from the ground up we designed sustainable and eco-friendly products and packaging by amalgamating vibrant colors and icons to capture the eye. Another mission of Dewy Organics is to stimulate the community’s economy by partnering with other local companies and by providing new job opportunities.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

I believe what really helped built my reputation within my market and locally within other small businesses has been that I really started from nothing and have slowly pivoted over the past five years. I have kept consistent by doing pop up markets, instagram posts, and online ads for years. Slowly getting better one market at a time, numerous people have told me they have seen me evolve in-front of them. With consistency and passion I have gained a trusting reputation.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

I think part of the reason why I have been resilient has been through bravery and positivity for the future. Moving to San Antonio was a huge struggle for resilience, not knowing anyone in the city and trying to balance being a student Esthetician, working as many hours around my school schedule, and still trying to push my small business in-between. There were times that I really wanted to quit when struggling to pay rent, and not having any money for food or gas to even get to work. I was able to push through and come out of just being to survive once I finished schooling, I was able to work more hours and use my education within my business.
