We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carmen Sauceda a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Carmen, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
I believe there are a few challenges. Right now products keep going up that has been one of the biggest factors. Just inflation in general is hurting everyone. So sometimes a client wants to book but are hurting due to inflation. It affects their budget. So they end up looking for someone that is cheaper rather than the artist they truly want. Business wise I can’t really lower my prices because of inflation or I won’t be profiting all. It’s been a real challenge lately.
Carmen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Growing up I always loved doing my hair and makeup. At first I started going to school for nursing but my heart wasn’t in it. My friend at the time convinced me to go look at a cosmetology school with her. Once I checked it out I knew it was what I wanted to do. I’ve been in love with it ever since. I started out in a salon for a few years but always loved when I would get to do updo . After leaving the salon I embarked on starting my bridal business. So much has changed from when I first started the bridal business and I’m always learning and growing. I’ve been lucky and met so many amazing brides and friends in this industry. My goal is to always make sure my clients vision comes to life. Their happiness is my happiness. Creating a timeline, prep guidelines, and continuous clear communication are some of the key factors to this success. I’ve taken various classes to continue providing the best to my clients. I know how important this beautiful day is for my clients and it is my main priority to make sure I provide the very best always. I’ve been licensed for 11 years now and I can’t imagine doing anything else.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Giving the best customer service and making sure each and every client is happy. Also being honest when I don’t think something will fit them well. Compromise and always teaching and explaining why I feel this way is best. Clients prefer honesty and you providing them with the best.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Referrals from past clients are always good. I think a big one has been referrals from other artists or creatives in the industry. When people see your customer service and how you are with clients they’ll trust you to refer over their clients. Especially in the bridal industry our reputation is everything. So we make sure we refer our clients to the best so their day goes as smooth as possible.
