We were lucky to catch up with Carmen Gagnon recently and have shared our conversation below.

Carmen, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?

A big trend that has come back more then ever is perms! Especially for boys. I am getting as young as 6th grade to high school boys getting perms. The soccer and basketball athletes usually just get the top permed. The football and baseball athletes usually get more of a permed mullet style.

Carmen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

I always wanted to get in the beauty industry or become a therapist. Becoming a therapist was going to take too much schooling in my opinion, so I took the cosmetology route. I absolutely love my decision and wouldn’t change a thing. I love being able to create art and transform someone’s hair into something they love. While making them feel relaxed and comfortable when sitting in my chair. What I enjoy most about transforming hair is color, perms, cuts and styling.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?

The best source of receiving new clients is from my current clientele. I love when my clients refer their friends or family because that proves to me that I did my absolute best and they trust me enough to do so. One of the best compliments one can receive in the beauty industry.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

I was a month or so away from graduating cosmetology school when I found out I was pregnant. I thought it would be in my best interest to drop out at the time and focus on a career in insurance. Even though insurance was not my passion, I am thankful for the experience and opportunity to have a job during the pandemic. I then decided to go back to cosmetology school in 2021 to finish, now here I am working my dream career.
