We were lucky to catch up with Carmen Erholtz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Carmen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents encouraged my siblings and me to try new things, put forth my best effort, and also to stick it out for at least a season. This taught me that it was okay to put myself out there, even if I failed right away, but that it was important to not give up right away if it was hard. They also taught me to work as though I am working for the Lord in everything I do, instead of working for myself or for others. This has really translated into how I approach new projects or tasks, knowing that I’m called to work and work hard, but my identity is not in my work.

Carmen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started Content by Carm in April of 2023 after working in HR at a corporate company for a few years. While I was working in corporate, I would listen to podcasts about entrepreneurs and dream of owning my own company someday. My sister owns an interior design company called Willaby Way, and I was able to start helping her with some marketing and social media content. Pretty soon into that, I realized I was hooked and was curious if other companies would be interested in outsourcing their social media. I had worked in a variety of marketing roles, including social media before getting into HR, so it felt like a great space to dive into.
I provide social media management services mainly to interior designers and home builders, which has been a joy! Oftentimes, business owners are passionate about what they went into business for, but they aren’t always excited about the marketing piece of owning a business, especially social media marketing. I really feel like I get to help life a burden off their shoulders and help showcase their amazing work to their audience and potential new clients, which can help their business grow.
With each of my clients, I really strive to get to know them – their family, their interests, their lives outside of their work – because I care about them and want to form a relationship with them. Also, I think because my business is still new, I am learning something new every single day and wanting to grow so that I can be a better resource to my clients.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
A huge way that I’ve learned is actually through business podcasts! While I was working in corporate America, I would listen to podcasts about entrepreneurs and how they could market themselves. I love the audio experience of listening to a podcast because I get to really focus on what the host and guest are saying and learn from them. A few of my favorites are The Goal Digger Podcast, the Freelance Friday Podcast, and The Heart & Hustle Podcast for business. Each of these has shaped how I started my business, how I manage work/life balance, and how I care for my clients.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I schedule monthly calls with my clients to discuss business updates, answer any questions, and hear what’s going on in their business so their social media truly reflects them. Also, during these meetings, I ask about their weekends, their days, and how their lives outside of work have been. This really helps me to get to know my clients and care about them.
