Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carly Stone. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Carly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
The story behind the name of my business came to me pretty easily…growing up in Southern California I’m a total beach girl through and through. I’ve always loved the water and have spent the majority of my life at the beach. I come from a family of watermen, both my Papa, dad and brother surf and I’ll paddle out from time to time. We all love being in or near the ocean and it’s a huge part of my family’s life. Living near the sea is extremely comforting to me; it feels like home. I’m always able to find refuge at the beach and putting my feet to the sand and seeing the horizon leaves me feeling grounded and at peace.
I thought “SeaStone Productions” would be a perfect name for my business because, naturally, I love filming surfing/the ocean and it’s a play on my name because my first name is Carly, so CStone – SeaStone seemed to be fitting.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a freelance videographer based in Southern California. I got into my craft at a young age (around 9 years old going around filming anything and everything with a small camcorder). As a teenager I became more passionate about filmmaking and entered a number of student film contests. I won a surf film contest at 15 and that really stoked the fire for pursuing the path further.
Flash-forward eighteen years and I’m now blessed to have a career as a videographer. I provide consistent, clean, high-quality video in a way that tells my clients’ stories and vision in the most authentic and organic way possible. My style is very run-and-gun, fly-on-the-wall and documentary-like. I love capturing people doing what they do best, whatever that may be (sports, art, lifestyle, music). I love documenting real, raw moments that evoke emotion. I solve my clients problems by providing a service that can reach many of people, captivate audiences and spread whatever message is trying to be conveyed.
I’m proud of how far I’ve come, from being a kid making videos in my backyard, to apprenticing for video at Rip Curl, to entering the workforce filming surfing, soccer, fitness brands, musicians, working as an editor at a production company, and now fully freelancing as a videographer.
My vision is to partner with people who are doing good things in the world and are making a difference, and use my tools and skills to help bring stories to life.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being an artist, is getting to create something out of nothing that is fully my own. To be able to say: I made that from start to finish and to know that I created something that hopefully touches the hearts of whomever is watching. To have full ownership of my creation and make art that I’m proud of is extremely fulfilling. I feel grateful to have this artistic endeavor become my business. It’s not easy, but it’s definitely rewarding to say: I secured that client myself, and I was able to execute and produce a form of art for them that helps their business succeed.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me has been referrals. I have worked with some amazing people who have spread the word about my business and that in and of itself has helped me tremendously. So if you or anyone you know is in need of a videographer – send them my way! I love to collaborate with like-minded filmmakers and foster connections and relationships.
