Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carly Gully. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Carly, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I wondered for a long time what working a 9 to 5 would be like, where my evenings, weekends and time alone would be for me. I was able to understand that feeling for a year working at a desk staring at excel spreadsheets and entering documents in. I felt like a robot, my evenings turned into the desire to just sleep, weekends felt like a painful reminder that Monday was coming, and time alone was surrounded by trying to remember if I submitted an order correctly. I was ultimately laid off from that company along with several others and I told myself I’d never put myself in a job where I didn’t love what I did or did what I wanted to do.
I found choosing myself while also being rational was the the most amazing feeling. Overall I feel like it makes me feel carefree and allow life to live through me as I go with the flow of how I want to feel. The joy I feel when my design or creativity makes an impact towards those around me fills me with a unbelievable feeling. Working in the creative world is like therapy. I’m able to use painting as a way to release emotions, designing as a way to step outside of the present and photography is a way to see life in a different light.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve been focusing my talents on Graphic Design for 10+ years, I started designing in high school, and in 2008 I opened Adobe Photoshop and never closed it. I’ve lived by one thing since my first flyer. LIFE IS BASED ON VISUAL IMAGERY, AND IT CAN AFFECT THE MIND AND THE SPIRIT, SO I’M FINDING A WAY TO CHANGE EVERYTHING. My proudest moments are when I see my designs come to fruition. My goal is not just being a stepping stool for brands that come my way but to help my clients be more successful because they not only draw in their clientele but look better than their competition.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Yes, Brand Aid by Brad VanAuken and 100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design by Steven Heller & Veronique Vienne as been extremely influential in how I look at the impacts of my designs and what I do with my designs to truly help other market there business. These books not only changed how I design but my interaction with design.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My main purpose is to establish a creative market within myself that I’m able to teach and pass any and all knowledge to those who wish to join the creative world. The challenge is learning never quite ends so building a foundation someone can admire comes to a close second.
