We recently connected with Carlton Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Carlton, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, folks often look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight – but that often obscures all the nitty, gritty details of everything that went into the growth phase of your business. We’d love to hear about your scaling story and how you scaled up?
I started off small not knowing which lane I wanted to take as a photographer. Since the first time speaking to you guys I have been able to grow my photographer business. I had to take some time to think what it was I had a passion for and that was editorial style photography. I knew that was my most creative form of photography. I took the time to learn new techniques using the outlet YouTube. Learning new techniques with editing I grew into giving the world a natural feel when it came to my photography art. There was a time when I thought giving the people what they wanted was the goal and that made me feel like I wasn’t enjoying my craft, so from that feeling made me decide to stick to what I do. I started to do some off the wall projects gaining inspiration from my favorite photographers. I wanted to put my twist on the photography culture. I then knew I wanted to be remember in this game for my passion and view. I got introduced to a platform that would take my photography to new heights giving the world the chance to see my art. Now today I have multiple international and national publications with prestige magazines. I am able to catch the attention from many different types of clients now. The growth continues…….
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
hello world my name is Carlton Williams and I’m a photographer from Pontiac, Michigan. Growing up I was into art and computers and I would either draw, paint or take a photo from a cell phone and photoshop that photo making it look ten times cooler. time passes in life and I grow out of my passions and had to get my life together as a man. I got back into the mindset of doing what I love to do to provide for myself and my family. I took my love for art and computers and picked up a camera. my first camera was a film style cannon. at the time I was living in New Orleans and was in the process of moving back to Michigan and I knew this was the time to take what I wanted to do serious. now I provide any photography service there is and I’m steady growing in the photography world. my expertise service is editorial style for those growing talents. what sets me apart from other photographers is I stay in my lane and don’t like to mimic others. I stick to my view of photography and the people love that about me. I give the people that natural look they’re looking for.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to be the head photography of vogue magazine. Fashion is very creative and I know that’s my lane is this photography journey. I wanna be that photography that takes all those beautiful shots you see in the magazines, the clothing stores you love to shop at, those banners you see in the city.
How did you build your audience on social media?
First I had to learn the rules of social media. I ended up growing towards instagram to grow my business. I loved how instagram was when it first came out and was a platform that allowed photographers to showcase their talents. I used the resources I had on instagram to get my work to catch as many eyes as I could in my home state. instagram is great for networking with others and from that we are able to share each others work. I started off doing a bunch of free work building my portfolio for online sites. I suggest creating social media goals to stay consistent and catch as many peoples attention that you can. follow the rules so you dont get shadow banned
