We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carlota Rodriguez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carlota below.
Hi Carlota, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
It really took me some time to realize and understand that I had to dedicate a lot of time to my business in order to see profits. In my regular job, I had a more secure salary, but if I didn’t step out of my comfort zone, I would be tied to my job and wouldn’t be able to spend the time I now spend with my baby. In entrepreneurship, there are always better months than others, but during the months or weeks when profits seem lower, that’s when you need to dedicate more time to social media and promotions. That’s what has worked for us.

Carlota, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My mom has been in the handmade accessories business for many years; she’s a goldsmith and spent a lot of time learning how to craft each piece. Back in Venezuela, our home country, she sold a lot, and when we migrated to the U.S., she knew it was something she didn’t want to leave behind.
She wanted to keep doing it, so I suggested we partner (mother and daughter), and here we are. We’ve been selling our accessories in Orlando FL for almost four years now, where you can find us at local markets or online, and we ship to many countries.
We sell mostly handmade accessories, many gold-plated, and some in stainless steel. The quality is so good that I’d even say most of them are waterproof. We offer earrings, rings, necklaces, and bracelets, and what sets us apart is our commitment to meeting each customer’s needs. We treat every client the way we’d like to be treated. Each customer is very special to us, and in a market with so much competition, it’s an honor when they choose us. We also have many loyal buyers.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Technology and social media are incredibly important today for the growth of entrepreneurs. Beyond just posting photos or videos, the key is knowing how to do it, understanding what audience you’re targeting, and studying who you want your potential customers to be. It’s not just about making a post or video; it’s about doing it intelligently. To learn all of this, I had to complete some courses that have helped me from the moment I started until now.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?

Of course, and it’s something I always remind myself of and confirm every day: as human beings, we need to constantly update ourselves. Reading to understand how to do everything on social media is ideal. On my personal Instagram, I always share what has helped me grow as an entrepreneur. There are very complete guides on how to basically start from scratch, and I’d be happy to share them with anyone interested through my Instagram, which is @escarlotarodriguez. A community that grows together is truly rewarding.
