Carlos, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?

Thank you for inviting me to share my journey. Transitioning to earning a full-time living from my creative work has been a gradual process, not an overnight success. Initially, diversification was key; I expanded my skills beyond painting to include photography, filmmaking, and design, which opened multiple revenue streams. This approach allowed me the freedom to explore and deepen my professional interests while ensuring financial stability.

Over time, I learned the importance of self-promotion and networking alongside creating art. If there’s advice I’d give to my younger self, it would be to adopt a proactive mindset toward learning and networking sooner. While I could have potentially sped up my journey with this approach, each step has been crucial in my personal and professional development.

I’m Carlos Martínez León, an artist from Maracaibo, Venezuela, with a significant chapter of my journey spent in Florence, Italy. My art explores sacred geometry, figurative painting, and the interplay between representation and abstraction, aiming to capture the essence and spirituality of the human condition. As the cofounder and creative director of MIFA, I’ve contributed to creating a platform for cultural exchange and artistic education.

My career and artistic expression navigate the balance between traditional approaches and innovative perspectives, seeking to engage and inspire through new perceptions. Beyond my work in painting and design, I share insights and experiences on my YouTube channel, “Carlos Martinez Leon,” and on my blog at martinezleon.com, primarily in Spanish. These platforms allow me to discuss the nuances of an artistic career and connect with a wider audience, extending my commitment to fostering reflection and dialogue within the art community.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?

Society can best support artists by empowering them to manage their careers effectively. This involves educating artists on financial management, investment strategies, and basic accounting principles. By understanding business administration fundamentals, artists can pursue their dreams without compromising their creative aspirations. Providing resources and tools for artists to navigate the complexities of the business side of their work will foster a thriving creative ecosystem where artists can succeed both creatively and financially.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to contribute to creating a more beautiful world. Living in this era and contributing even a small part to the development of future artists feels immensely fulfilling. It’s about leaving a legacy of beauty and inspiration that transcends the present, shaping the aesthetic and cultural values of tomorrow.
