We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carlos Lezama. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carlos below.
Alright, Carlos thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I think learning the craft is just a process of self discovery, you will never be able to see how far you can go if you dont keep on trying to do new things. The path is only a bunch of decisions you take everyday that guide you but only knowing and trying the things you dont like will guide find what you think works better for each project.
Carlos, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I think of myself as a football graphic historian, i work creating images that allow the fans to remember their favourite moments/players in a way that is closer to the world of art than just the social media content world, if im still not there yet at least that is my goal.
I obviously have a lot of love for football and art and with each project i work on my goal is to spread the same love to the art and football lovers.
I come from an advertising background which has helped me to be able to pick between different ways for approaching ideas, i try to be as direct as possible and adapt my artwork to have a cultural connection with the viewer. Im aware that these are fast changing times and most of the content is forgotten very quickly but my goal is to be able to create memorable pieces.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Whenever i think of creative work i get really scared of the idea of repeating myself forever, the passion and excitement that every project brings is my favourite part of the job. I know most of the clients need to see older project they can visually relate to for each campaign but for me the best clients are the ones that trust you and think you will be able to take the best decision in terms of creativity.
I think my goal with every project is doing something, bigger, better, smarter than i ever did before, i want to keep evolving every way.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Being able to adapt is a very positive thing in the creative world and i think the less you are stubborn with your own ideas of what you think is correct and the more opened to understand other points of view, the more you will be able to progress and go further.
Im not a particular fan of naive or simplistic illustration styles but i being able to use them when is needed might open your mind to whole different world and also reaches a totally different target in terms of audience.
