We were lucky to catch up with Carlos Elvir recently and have shared our conversation below.
Carlos, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
I wish I would have started earlier my career as a photographer when I had the chance. I feel left behind since I started just one year ago as a photographer and found out my passion was film around 2023. I would love to have started my business as an event photographer and probably volunteered more when I had more chances to make connections. If there was something I could have done was buying a new/better camera cause I feel that is my biggest limitation.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Honduran Cinematographer and Photographer based in Nashville. I got my Degree at Trevecca Nazarene University in Film and TV Production and I have experience in Weddings, sets, feature films and short films. Thanks to my background in film, I offer photography for events and weddings with a documentary focus while also focusing a lot on directing and composition.
I had the chance of working on sets for NF as an extra and visiting the set for the show The Chosen. I’ve seen how the big productions work and I try to do my work in smaller productions mirroring that experience I have been blessed to gain. You can find me as CJProductions in wedding wire and IG to see my photography services and you can send a message to know more about my work as a DP.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being able to show people my work and seeing the reactions. I love whenever I am working in Photography or as a DP working with lights, showing clients the end result and they beimg amazed trying to figure out how I made it look like that.
I’ve had clients not feeling confident or telling me that they usually look bad in pictures and it feels so rewarding showing them pictures and knowing they loved them.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pursuing a degree in Film & TV Production, I wanted to work as a DP or as a Director but I don’t have a great camera or budget to spend on lighting which made me have to pivot and change directions to photography and focusing more with working with couples and learning how to pose. This has helped me as a cinematographer as well since it has allowed me to be more creative while working with clients who are not actors, who have never been on set before. I do wish I have the opportunity to work again as a DP on film projects in the future.
