We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carlos Coleman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Carlos, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the best boss, mentor, or leader you’ve ever worked with.
I would have to say pretty much everybody at my current job has been super supportive of me chasing my dreams in full but one person in particular that went above and beyond and would even bend company rules for me is my old manager Joe! A short story that kicked everything off with out bond is when I had reached out to the camp of the Grammy award winning artist Nas (Nasir Jones) to see if they needed an extra photographer for the show, knowing that if they booked me I wouldn’t be about to make it I still reached out anyway. So hours go by and the team had finally got back with me letting me know they wanted me to shoot the show, of course at that point I was ecstatic to point tears even fell ! I then run into my managers office to let him know that I’ve been granted the biggest opportunity at this point in my photography career, I told him I understand I have about 3 hours left shift left but regardless on the consciences I would be leaving would early to take this offer, he then looked me right in my eyes and said “leave go on and chase your dreams this job will be here tomorrow and the next day, go out and have fun and let me know how it went!” After the situation our bond had really strengthened and made balancing work and my career was easier and less stressful. He told me everybody deserves to be different and chase their dreams and this was the him helping in anyway he could.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
What initially got me into being a creative was me always messing around with my dads old equipment as a kid so I would always sneak and take his things when he wasn’t around, just the thought of being able to capture moments and make those moments last forever always intrigued me ! So as I got older I was always the friend out of the group to document every little thing that I could and make little short movies just so we could always go back and reminisce from time to time. Years had went by and I was now planning my big escape from my home town (Grand Rapids, MI) where I would soon quit my job and move out west to Las Vegas ! Even at that time the thought of taking photography seriously wasn’t in my mind in the slightest but as my journey progressed more and more the thought soon became the only thing on my mind. In early 2019 I decided I was ready to move back home in order to pursue photography professionally, I actually wanted to do travel photography such as wildlife, landscapes etc. earlier in that same early I bumped Into a local artist that goes by Cheeze Weez and saw that he had a concert and I offered a hand in shooting it which he said he had a guy already to work but me just wanting to document so bad I then told him I’d come out and do it for free him being very surprised he accepted! From that very small opportunity I’ve went on to shoot with artist like Lil Tjay, Nas , Mozzy and so many more ! Now today I’m currently balancing my photography career and a multi media brand called Risky Business.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Honestly I would have to say the free expression of creating what YOU want ! Like that feeling of always being in control is almost a euphoric feeling, with us living in a word with a lot of traditional job opportunities being a dreamer and being somewhat noticeable and recognized by some is a great feeling and it gives you that boost of feeling like you can do it and you can’t make it being different.

Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
Honestly and truthfully I love the idea of NFTs because it gives creatives a lucrative way to move art from the comfort of your own home and anywhere you are in the work. I feel like it has a negative view point from the masses because a few millionaires wanted there make it more about the money than the art itself.
