We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carlos Castillo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carlos below.
Carlos, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Ive come to find that the process in learning and re-learning how to do things and figuring out how things work has been the most exciting part of my journey. I remember when I first started my career being stuck to the computer and skimming through books on how to sew and how to make patterns. That kind of hunger to know more pushes you to keep going and experimenting which in the end pushes you as a creative.
Carlos, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Im a designer born and raised in Houston, Texas. I like to spend my time either creating or hanging out with family, friends or my boyfriend Chris. I started designing clothing back in 2010 and released my first fully designed collection in 2016. Ive participated in numerous fashion shows in Texas as well as showed a complete collection during New York Fashion Week back in 2017. What really kicked off the creativity in me was the Bad Romance music video by Lady Gaga. I remember feeling so inspired and wanting to create and draw and to this day when Im feeling a creative block I refer back to that video. As Ive developed creatively I really wanted to focus more on the technical part of fashion, meaning on the construction. For me personally quality has always been important and I want people to associate my brand with it. I take a long time in developing what I design and I take an even longer time executing it. I believe that there is always more room to improve and perfect ideas and I want to offer the very best to those that choose to wear us.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The need to constantly change is what keeps pushing me forward. The world is filled with so many people, things and experiences and I want to constantly convey that through my work. I like that through this form of art I can show emotion and tell a story that resonates with someone out there. I want people to not only see pretty clothes but also see the message behind them. At the end of the day they’re just clothes but I know that the story that inspired it is what makes it special.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
In this age of social media its almost a must to have a presence online. If done right it could actually help in growing your business. You’re not limited to just those around you knowing of your work but now you’re connecting to a larger audience worldwide who want to know what you have to offer. Its an essential marketing tool that helps connect with potential customers.
