Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carlos Carmen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Carlos, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
From an early age I was lucky enough to be surrounded by a lot of music. At the same time, I had teachers who guided me, such as Rosa Sepulveda, Roberto Jimenez and Carlos Nano Gallardo. But despite that, I consider myself self-taught. Over the years I have gone through different styles of music with duos, trios and bands. For me, the most important thing was to love music above all else. Being disciplined as much as possible, practicing and being constant was my method. And what served as a challenge was to listen to a lot of music and try to play it by ear on the guitar. That is a greater effort. Learning does not happen overnight, it takes time and a lot of patience, but mainly love.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
First of all, I am a rock music artist born in Chile, self-exiled, and relocated to the United States. Since I have always been involved in music, upon arrival in this country, I participated with different artists and groups, both of unknown, independent status and of well-known international status as well. But, for several years now, I have been focused on my solo career. My genre is Rock in Spanish, with influences from Soda Stereo, Charly Garcia and the Beatles. My sound is very original and peculiar because I don’t want to sound like anyone else. What I am most proud of is that, right now, I have FM radio airplay in several countries despite not being signed by any record company. I also have a poetry book that I have for sale and that includes art collaboration with a prominent digital illustration artist.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The biggest challenge of being an artist is having the courage to face an audience with your own original material, knowing that there will be many who will criticize the work. The greatest reward from that, is that by doing so, you get to share, in this case music, with all the people of the world and hopefully bring joy and peace to the hearts of many or them.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
At one point, when I found myself playing for other people and playing other people’s music, I realized I felt empty in a certain way. Eventually the moment came in which I felt compelled to immediately put all my strength into my personal project. And since I felt capable of doing it, I challenged myself.
