We recently connected with Carlos Adriano and have shared our conversation below.
Carlos, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
From a very young age I felt attracted to show business and it was clear to me that my life would take place on stage. Fortunately, my family always supports me in my artistic path. But for an inexperienced young man it was very difficult to live exclusively from entertainment and I alternated between various jobs to support myself. In 2002, I decided to leave my native Argentina and go to Europe in search of new horizons and better opportunities. And I found myself in Spain, at 25 years old, with a suitcase full of dreams but without knowing where to start.
The beginning was not easy at all. I had no money, I had no job, I didn’t know anyone and I even had to spend a few days living and sleeping on the street.
I felt that leaving my country in search of my dream had been a big mistake. But suddenly one day, after knocking on countless doors without getting a response, an opportunity arose to start working doing my shows in some parks in a tourist city in Spain. The opportunity had arrived. I had to take advantage of it. I held on with all my strength and put all my effort into doing the best thing I knew how to do, getting on stage.
From that day my life changed completely. I never did another job again other than taking my art to theaters, festivals and events of all kinds.
More than 20 years have passed since that day and looking back I realize that I am very lucky. The road has not been easy but I have lived extraordinary experiences, I have traveled a lot, I have met incredible places, wonderful people and I can only thank the universe for everything it has given me.
If I had to start over knowing what today I would possibly do things differently. But beyond the circumstances, I am convinced that my path is marked by passion and love for what I do. I am convinced that that is the key. Deeply love what you do and trust that the path that life offers us is the best at all times.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My job is to put on shows. Specifically magic, comedy and clown shows. I love making the public laugh. The energy of laughter is tremendously powerful. It makes me happy and I feel that more than a job it is a game and a gift for me. I travel throughout Spain and to different places around the world taking my shows to theaters, festivals and events of all kinds. My goal is to amuse, entertain, surprise and excite the public. To ensure that during the time the show lasts, my audience forgets about their problems and connects with the positive energy that we all have inside but sometimes we forget due to the whirlwind of everyday life.
In addition to my work on stage, I have written several books, lectures and talks to professionals and I direct and advise other artists on their own projects.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Everyone is creative. Creativity is something innate in human beings. What happens is that sometimes today’s society leads us like a herd towards a routine life, where the urgent overrides the important and we feel forced to put our dreams on hold. From my point of view and my experience, the key is in the love and passion that each person brings to those dreams. Do not let yourself be defeated by obstacles and move forward putting all the energy available. If one lives and works from love, the universe’s response will always be a gift.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Without a doubt, the most comforting thing about being an artist is freedom. We artists are somewhat dreamers. We dream of a better world and we have the freedom to give our utopian vision of the world to other people, share emotions and reflections from another perspective. That is something that unfortunately not everyone can do. There is also something of rebellion, of feeling that there is another way to go through this life beyond the imposed canons. Our obligation as artists is to explore those places.
