We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carlita Pitts a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Carlita, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us a story about a time you failed?
When I first launched my business, I didn’t do enough research on pricing. It was difficult to determine as I didn’t see much information about how much content creators charge for their services. My prices were so low that I booked many clients but quickly experienced burnout and a lack of motivation. I quickly learned that I had to do more research on pricing and redo my pricing structure.
Researching and determining what prices we charge for our services is crucial because it helps us determine fair and competitive pricing that accurately reflects the value of our offer. Pricing too low can result in lost profits while pricing it too high can make it difficult to attract clients. In addition, understanding the factors that influence the value of a business can help us make informed decisions about how to improve and grow.
Carlita, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Carlita Pitts, and I own Divine Lita Content Creator and Marketing. I offer content creation services for wineries, vineyards, wine distributors, and PR firms. I started my business back in 2019. I am most proud of sharing my wine, travel, and vineyard journey with the many people I am connected with on social and beyond. I also love to work with my clients on creating stories to share with their clients for brand awareness.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
At its core, being creative is a form of self-expression that, for me, is incredibly fulfilling. The ability to convey my thoughts, emotions, and ideas through writing, videography, and photography is a liberating experience and an opportunity to explore my creativity and imagination.
My content primarily focuses on vineyard travel – which is a niche market. There has been much interest in exploring wineries and vineyards worldwide, and I love that I have the opportunity to contribute to the community of people who have a shared interest in highlighting wine, food, hotels, and the beauty of the vineyards. I receive personal satisfaction from knowing that a broad audience sees my content and that I can inspire and motivate them to visit these regions.
Finally, and most importantly, I love connecting with fellow content creators who love exploring wine regions and sharing it with the world as I do. I have met many people and made many friends with this shared interest – and it Is great to learn about new places from them. It is fantastic to have a group of people in many places who are always willing to venture out and share wine and vineyard exploration adventures.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I started documenting my wine and travel content creation business a few years ago, I focused on working closely with the wineries and vineyards in local areas (mostly Maryland and Virginia) to market them to my audience. I also started a blog, as I wanted a place outside of social media to share these experiences. My business did well during the first two years, generating revenue and awareness. I was proud of the tremendous growth during that time.
I did not anticipate the interest I would receive from my audience from all over, requesting suggestions for places to visit and asking to help them create travel itineraries – primarily for celebrations such as anniversaries, bachelorette getaways, etc. As such, my business will expand later this year to include travel planning assistance for those who want to explore – but are unsure of where to go, eat, stay, and what transportation options to utilize. I am very excited about this and didn’t realize I would need to expand in the travel planning business and the content creation services I offer.
