Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carlie Adair. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Carlie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
My name is Carlie and growing up, my friends always called me nicknames and would come up with jokes surrounding my name. When I would be crafty, my friends would call me “Crafty Carl”, and other name puns would circle like “Carlito” etc. When I started my photography business, I was working a lot of festivals and the “Where’s Carl” festival joke was circling (this group of festival-goers lost their friend and were wandering around yelling “Where’s Carl?!” and “Carl??!!” for days). So after a long time of deliberation, I landed on “Shots By Carl” for the name of my LLC. It stuck & has since created a brand for itself! I also love that its an androgynous name- as I am a female in a male dominated side of the industry! Its been fun to watch it grow.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi there, my name is Carlie and I am a professional photographer, and the owner of Shots By Carl, LLC. I started my company back in 2018 and specialize in event, low-light, and portrait photography. I got into the industry by working for a blog first, and then being recruited by bands, venues and others in the industry. I am very proud of working with Atlanta Magazine as one of their event and show home photographers. If I could tell someone anything about my company, it would be to never stop believing in yourself and challenging yourself to grow and be better in your craft.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Business cards are the fastest way to grow your network as an event photographer!! If you are immersed in a large group of people, pass those cards out like candy! If they like what they see, odds are that they will follow you. I recommend for anyone just starting out to post regularly and engage with an organic audience. If you post a similar topic in your posts and make your grid colors consistent, the Instagram algorithm usually works in your favor.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth is my number one source of a new client base! And having a URL.
