We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carletha Ward a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Carletha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
We are all created with purpose, to make a contribution to this world. Life is not just about a day-to-day existence but, instead, is our opportunity to leave the world better for those coming along side us and behind us. We ought to want to leave a legacy of empowerment and fulfillment.
Every day, we are leaving an impression on the world of goodness, greatness, possibility, audacity, faith in living out the plan of God for our lives, responding to that pull from within to make the world, your world, a better place.
Every day, we want to take some action to breakthrough to the land of possibilities of what we can be and move out of the land of complacency and indifference. When we think of “making a contribution to future generations,” (excerpt from daringtolivefully.com), it’s how we live today that will inspire the generations coming along beside us and behind us to get excited about what the possibilities are for their lives.
Legacy is the name that I chose for my business to draw attention to this. My coaching business supports women who feel stuck in life, who are ready to experience breakthrough living; who know that this is their time to be confident, bold and fulfilled. Ready to get inspired, and take some degree of action, if only a baby step, to grow into the life they choose. They are ready to get off the sidelines and get into the game of life! Not living someone else’s view of what life ought to be but living their own lives! Your legacy is influenced by what you do today!
Carletha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Today, I am a Life Coach focused on helping women who are stuck in life get inspired, take action and live their dreams. I have learned from my own personal experience that this work begins with a mindset reset. I started my business to help women step into their fulness and to provide a blueprint for how to do so. It’s important to me that women realize who we are and what we can contribute to our personal world, but also to the world at large. We can move beyond setbacks and limited opportunities of our past, and effect change for ourselves while serving as an example for those coming beside us and behind us. I offer individual, as well as group, coaching programs and have helped many women to experience transformation and fulfillment in life.
What sets me apart from others who do similar work is my own journey. Everyone has a journey and each is distinct to the individual. The women that I can most effectively serve are those who feel stuck in life, lack confidence to make a move or just don’t know where to start. Some people also just don’t know what their issue is. They just know that there has to be something better that what they are currently experiencing in life. My coaching approach is influenced by who I am, as a person, and what my life experiences have taught me – my mistakes, as well as my successes and the lessons that I have learned from them all.
Before starting my business as a Life Coach, I was employed in the corporate world as a Senior Vice President in Human Resources for a major financial institution. I experienced a great level of professional success. However, there were so many years, even as I was being promoted and experiencing success in my career, that my personal life was anything but successful. Married twice, divorced twice, overcame domestic violence and all the trauma associated with that. There were many joy-filled times, but there were also many adversities that ended up clouding my mindset and self-perception. But I learned how to defy the negatives and to embrace who God says I am. It is by experiencing the challenges, coming through the challenges, finding a way to not just live but to thrive, by the grace of God, that I came to realize that my story, through sharing the lessons that I had learned, good and bad, could encourage, inspire, and mobilize other women to rise up from whatever challenges that they had come through and experience success and fulfillment in life.
My Christian faith has played a huge role in my ability to climb out of the hole of guilt and low self-esteem that I once found myself in. Understanding that God created me with purpose and through His Son, Jesus Christ, and His Spirit living in me, I was empowered to throw off the guilt and the shame that I wore like a shroud. I no longer had to live a double life, one in public and another internal to myself, but I could live an authentic life and could help others to do the same. I have learned that there is no such thing as a wasted experience. God will use it all for good and He used all of the challenges of my life for good.
In 2002, I answered the call to enter Christian ministry and I was ordained in 2004. In 2007, I became a certified Life Coach and began to use my work in ministry and my coaching skills to help other women to see their value and their worth. I was able to share my journey with other women who were stuck in the guilt and shame of their past experiences and to help them to find their way out. I have been so rewarded to see women come into their own, to embrace their own authenticity, to face down what was trying to hold them down, and to blossom into amazing individuals – as writers, business owners, ministers, coaches, more fulfilled in their professions and others living more authentically, not hindered by what others think about them. They have learned to own their choices and to walk boldly in that. They haven’t all traveled my path, but something in their lives has stifled their ability to pursue what they desire most in life – success and fulfillment, however that may be defined for them.
My faith played a huge role in my life but there were also others encouraging me and supporting me along the way, as well. The key that unlocked the door for me was my sister telling me “You don’t have to live like this, with your dreams up on a shelf. Live your life.” The support that I got from her and others, coupled with my faith, helped me to see that I could be a support to others.
The service that I offer is a mindset reset, confidence, encouragement to go after your life and career goals. Working with me, women can clarify their desired outcome, their vision; create a plan of action; and prepare to execute for success. Do it for yourself, do it for this generation and the next. Be bold; take a step; get up and try it again. R. J. Smith is credited with it this quote but I learned it from my mother: “Nothing beats a failure but a try.”
What I am most proud of is having conquered some of the challenges that I’ve faced in my own life. I can be open, honest, and even vulnerable, to share my story and to let other women know that they, too, can move past the challenges of life and go on to pursue their dreams. Their story may not be as dramatic as mine, or it could be more so. There may still be thoughts and feelings that are holding them back from building the legacy they want to have for their daughters, granddaughters, sisters, etc. I do what I do to serve as an example to my own daughter and granddaughters.
What I want people, women especially, to know is that they are created with purpose and possibilities. If they are not currently experiencing fulfillment in any area of their lives, if they want something to change, they have to make some changes. If nothing changes, nothing changes.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There are a couple of books that have influenced my thinking and philosophy.
First, is the Bible. My perspective of what is right and just is shaped by my understanding of the word of God and I try to apply it to every aspect of my life – personal, business, social, etc. It helps to shape how I treat others – my family and friends, my associates, my clients and everyone. My favorite Scripture, as it relates to my life and to how I want to help other women, is Romans 12:2 “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Another book that has influenced me is “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey. Understanding these habits help me to form objective life and business perspectives rather than operate from a random or subjective perspective. Stay on point. The habits serve as a guide.
Another book is “The Dreamgiver” by Bruce Wilkinson. This book has been a most impactful read as it encourages one to go after their dreams and not allow anything or anyone to hold you back. The process is challenging and there will be times when you can’t see your way, but trust in your knowing that it is possible to achieve.
There are several others, including my own book “Lies You Accept that Keep You Stuck” which helps get to the point of breaking free from limiting beliefs and the residue of adverse situations. This books allows me to address the issues but also offer practical wisdom on how to push past the lies and experience the truth of how beautiful our lives can be.
Additionally, membership in the Wilson County Chamber of Commerce and NAWBO-Greater Raleigh, where I serve on both Boards, have helped enhance my business acumen, as well as providing opportunities to glean from the expertise of accomplished business women and men.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The beauty of a coaching business is that there is not a lot of start-up cost since, in my case, most of the actual coaching is done virtually, via Zoom. However, I did experience expenses related to certifications, training, conferences, administrative costs, memberships in women’s organizations, Chamber of Commerce, etc. For those expenses, I was able to use personal savings, along with support from family members. Since starting my business, I now lease office space which I share with another Life Coach.
I have been able to take advantage of so many resources, paid for by tax dollars, such as SCORE and Wilson Community College Small Business Center services. These services have been invaluable to me, helping me to better understand and navigate the world of entrepreneurship and the many challenges to any start-up operation.
