Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carlaura Flie-Jordan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Carlaura, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I absolutely agree, deciding on a name for your business and or company is one of the greatest decisions that you can make as a business owner. This name becomes the face of your business as well as everything that people will connect to you.
Dream Big Inspire Big defines everything that my business stands for, as well as everything that I believe in. I know that everything great starts with a dream/vision. You have to first imagine the very thing that you want or desire. No dream is ever too big. I always want people to know, no matter where you are in life, age, gender, financial status, nothing can stop you from pursuing your dreams. I also believe that as we are growing in life we should always strive to inspire others.
Dream Big Inspire Big was truly birthed with my two boys in mind. My husband and I are raising two young black boys who will one day become two black men, and one of our sons has autism. Truthfully speaking, the world already sees them a certain way. I needed them to understand that whatever it is that they decided to do in life, they were good enough to do so. Their dreams mattered, and their dreams were attainable. In whatever they do, I always want them to be an inspiration to those who they encounter.
Carlaura, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am truly an entrepreneur at heart. I am a published author, inspirational speaker, clothing brand owner, autism awareness advocate and so much more. I have a passion for connecting with people and helping in any way that God will allow me to do so. Writing children’s books is something that is near and dear to my heart. Inspiring children and parents through my books is always my main goal and focus.
Through my clothing brand I serve everyone from children, to adults. My brand empowers and uplifts with every quote that we place on our items. When people wear my brand I want them to know that thought, dedication, and prayer has gone into every design.
Becoming an advocate for autism awareness has been one of the most rewarding and greatest blessings of my life. When our son who is now 4yrs old was diagnosed with autism when he was 2yrs old, I felt like our world came crashing down. We didn’t know what to expect. However, this journey has been difficult, yet rewarding in so many ways.
Being a wife, mother, and entrepreneur can be a challenge on some days, but the thing that I’m most proud of is, I dreamed it and now I’m doing it. There is no dream too big, just believe that you can and nothing can stop you.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Starting out in business often times you feel like there is a lot that you have to prove. Not wanting your business to fail, proving people wrong who counted you out, and even proving to yourself that you can do it. In the midst of having this mindset you can get an isolated way of thinking, where you believe that you don’t need anyone and you can do it all on your own. This is a behavior/mindset that I had to unlearn if I wanted my business to succeed. No one can do it alone. We all need someone. You will burn yourself out thinking that you can make everything happen on your own.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
I have never been a person to take “unfamiliar” risk in my business. I tend to stick to what I know or feel comfortable with. However, there was a time when my sales were low and I needed a way to boost them. A person suggested sending out blast text messages to my customers and doing a sale. I really didn’t like the idea of blast messages, mainly because I felt like it was more of a bother to people. However, I knew that I needed to try something so we went ahead and took the risk. It definitely paid off. Our sales went up and the customers responded to the blast messages, it was a success. I was happy that I listened and took the risk.
