We recently connected with Carl Young and have shared our conversation below.
Carl, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
The first dollar we made for our sauce came from our friends at PSC, aka my wife Dianna’s coworkers! They had our sauce at a work lunch and encouraged us to sell it. So in 2019, a few days before the Super Bowl my wife looks at me and says “Super Bowl parties! Everybody needs a good wing sauce for their Super Bowl Party.” At that time we only had the Sweet Heat sauce. We made up labels that had a football theme and our favorite phrase “get lost in the sauce” on it. My wife, took several jars to her job and we had our first customers! Shout out to our PSC family! Thanks for the support and encouragement to start our business!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hi I’m Carl Young, one fourth of Young’s Backyard BBQ. It’s me, my wife Dianna, and our two kids, Maleigha and Elijah. We started Young’s Backyard BBQ to provide BBQ Sauce and Dry Rubs that are made with natural ingredients, that the whole family could enjoy. What sets apart from others is the ingredients we use and the flavor profile of our products. We have been told our sauces are layered with flavor. Our Sweet Heat sauce is sweet in the beginning, a delayed heat at the end, with a lot of hmmm that’s good, in the middle! This is the sauce that started it all!! Next up, Spicy Gold, a tangy mustard sauce with a kick, our twist on Carolina Gold Sauce. Our final sauce is a collaboration with Paul Family Farms maple syrup company! Sweet Maple is a unique combination of maple syrup, tomato sauce and a few other ingredients to create a unique flavor experience. We invite you all to get lost in the sauce. We also offer a Sweet Heat dry rub and an All Purpose Seasoning. Sweet Heat Rub is great on pork and salmon and the AP is great on beef, chicken, and vegetables.
The thing we are most excited about is the continued growth of our business. Each year we pick up new partnerships, from new retail locations to carry our products or another creator to develop a new product. We can’t wait to see what 2023 holds!!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creator is getting to know our customers and hearing how they use our products. We have heard a lot of interesting uses including using our Sweet Heat sauce on a salad! Talking BBQ with folks who visit our booth is the highlight of the markets and events we participate in!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Staring a small business for the first time there is a lot you don’t know! Where to buy bottles in bulk with out having to buy a pallet is something I wish I knew in the beginning. In the beginning we were buying jars from a local retail store. We didn’t know that we had two containers wholesalers in our backyard. Once we figured that out it was a game changer! For those that may need a container wholesaler, TK supplies in Travelers Rest have been a great resource for us, maybe they can help you as well.
