We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carl Blust a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Carl, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
Everyone thinks if you spit a dope flow, or have sick rhymes that you’re just gonna automatically make it in the industry. Well today that’s not the case.. The industry no longer cares if you have skills or talent, they look for popularity, good or bad. Doesn’t matter how fast you can rap, how good you think you are or may be? If you don’t have the fans or popularity to back it? You’re a nobody.. look at all the people individuals make famous these days.! Just think about it. Having talent anymore no longer matters?
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a person first and foremost.! I try to remain humble, and respectful to others, and I treat others the way I’d like to be treated. For starters, I grew up listening to some of the greats you hear today, Tupac, Biggie, Eminem, J-Cole, Kanye, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, Joyner Lucas, Mac Miller, Logic, Method Man, MGK, NAS, NF, Pusha T, Russ, Skizzy Mars, Tory Lanez, Wiz Khalifa, 6LACK and many more. I got into the industry listening to Eminem and slowly evolved into the artist I just mentioned. Music to me has always been an incredible outlet, and escape from reality. Everyone in the world has a song they can relate to on a real personal level that makes them feel some type of way? I love a human that can tell amazing stories, especially real ones that speak the truth. That’s what hip hop is it was always story telling to me.. I wanna make those life long classics not instant club bangers. My discipline is just sticking with it, you know? Just keeping up with my work and craft and not giving up, cause all it takes is one break through! And you can always request a verse and request my services on indieamplify.com
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My whole life I’ve been put down, mostly by family then as I got older friends, people who think they know you and then those who just love the internet just to put others down.. I used to find mainstream beats by artist I listen to on YouTube and write lyrics to that song, record the video on the original iPhone and would then upload those videos yo YouTube. And my raps were never bad, maybe off beat here and there not as good of a flow and what not now right? But the comments on my videos were like horrifying.. people telling me I suck, people telling me to give up, you’ll never make it. Even some being so hateful in telling me to kill myself. So when’s the whole world’s against you? You’re probably doing something right… and to let other people determine you as a person and your future with words is beyond me. So I stood up for myself, and kept doing music over all these years.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes, how to market my music and also learning how to produce before pursuing my actual career in music because it would make life and things just so much easier when you know more about the business, how to create your own beat and sound and then your own lyrics to that sound. It’s a total branding of yourself.
